Hello everyone. I am new to this board, and I come here searching for help. I am trying to apply for fafsa but my parents are illegal. I was born here and my father makes about 39000. My mother is a housewife but she also has a career. They both file taxes. But when I do my fafsa it asks me to use they're social. They don't have socials. I'm currently in my first year of college. Well community college. But I'm looking to transfer to a real university during the spring. Thanks for listening I hope there is a solution to my problem.

Also. I have filed my fafsa but it has been declined. Because the social security number does not match. Could anyone else tell me what other forms of financial aid I could get besides fafsa? Grants, scholarships. Links would be appreciated. I’m not trying to sound lazy, it’s just that I really don’t know how this works. My high school never thought us this.

Are YOU a U.S citizen or green card holder?

Thumper, the OP states s/he was born here.

Villa, I believe FAFSA can be processed if you put 000000000 for each of the SSNs for your parents.

@Thumper1, yes I am. My parents are taxpayers just illegal.

@Erin’s dad, I’m going to try that right now. Hopefully it works.

How do your parents file taxes without SSN? Do they have ITINs and can you use those numbers?

Did your FAFSA get declined b/c your SSN didn’t match or b/c of your parent’s issue?

@KCTaxguy I’m not sure really. It’s really complicated I guess they have socials but they’re fake. But they do have ITIN numbers, and also tax ID numbers. I’m just not sure what they use to file. I’m looking at their taxes right now. And it shows the fake social they use, but they’re also given a different social at the top right of the 1040 tax form.

And yes they declined it because of my fathers social.

Hope that helps.

Just gave me this error while doing my fafsa.

*Your reported that the father’s/stepfather’s social security number (SSN) is all zeroes (000-00-0000), and the mother’s/stepmother’s SSN is blank or all zeroes. You also reported that the parents tax return status is filed or will file, and the tax return type is not a foreign tax return.

HELP

The ITIN won’t work because it is the wrong number of digits, and because it doesn’t link properly through the IRS website, so 000-00-0000 is the usual work-around for undocumented parents. I’m not sure why this isn’t working for you right now. You could contact FAFSA and ask, or dig around in the website, find the link to print out the paper version, and file it that way. But go see the financial aid office at your college first. They should be able to tell you exactly what to do.

@happymofo going to call, and then request the form. Maybe it’s something I’m Doing wrong. Maybe it was that I put in the fake SSN. Can I substitute the TaxId number? Since its also a 9 digit like the SSN.

You should get the school’s help.

Also, don’t enter the “fake” SSN, you may be committing identity theft crimes.

More info from Internet

Also, your parents being illegal could make your situation for state residency difficult. If you live in California, look up AB 540. It’ll grant you in state tuition and state aid if you a aren’t a resident but went to high school there.

@4kidsdad. Lol’d at your name, not sure if it was on purpose. But moving on, so I’d just basically talk to the admissions counselour about the problem, right?

@Spaceship live in Texas, was born here

Go speak with the Financial Aid Office, not the Admissions Office. The Financial Aid staff will know exactly what to do in your case.

Your parents’ ITIN (Tax ID numbers) are just for filing their taxes. You can’t use them on the FAFSA.

@happymofo1 alright thanks, dude. Sounds good. Gonna call them tomorrow. Just don’t know the number. Thanks. But if this fails, but how should I go on looking for scholarships, or grants?

This won’t fail unless you have a drug record which disqualifies you for federal money. The Fin Aid office will help you file what you have to file in order to get the student loan. If your income is low enough, you also will get some Pell money, and you might get some work-study money.

If you can’t reach them by phone, get yourself over there and sit in the office until someone can help you out.

All financial aid offices are busy near the start of school year. You may want to appear in-person at the office.

Thanks for the helps guys, seriously. This is crucial for me. My parents total income is about 40,000 only 3 of us. Don’t know how much money I’d get. But my question is where are the financial aid offices? Live in Houston.

The financial aid office is probably in the main administrative building on the college campus. Check the college directory on its website to find out which building it is in.
