Financial aid help?

My mother has been unemployed for the past couple of months. I am applying for a transfer into alot of schools in New York. I am an instate student. What do I need to prove that my mother is unemployed? Is a copy of her resignation letter enough? I am desperate for answers. :/

Are you applying for Fall 2014 admission or later? Financial aid for SUNY schools is directly tied to the FAFSA which then carries over to the TAP application. If you have already filed with your mom’s information from her previous employer you can file an amended FAFSA with the new information. I believe there is a section to state your parent is unemployed or displaced. The schools you are applying to will be able to let you know what documentation will be needed to verify her unemployed status. Take heart NYS and SUNY schools are pretty generous to low income instate students.

I’m applying for a transfer into the spring 2015 semester. Thanks for your help. What is an amended FAFSA? Do you mean a fafsa inwhich it has corrections? I have looked for the question that asks if she is employed or not and I cannot find it.

My mother is not going to be willing to amend any changes to her tax return. That is what she told me.

She won’t need to change her tax return. Yes I meant coorected when I wrote amended. On the FAFSA, there is a question #84 about whether or not your parent is a displaced worker. If she meets the requirements, ie she didn’t quit but was laid off then you can answer yes on the corrected FAFSA. Otherwise contact the financial aid office for the schools in question and see what they recommend.
