BU financial said they would determine home equity application on a “case-by-case” basis. Of course I didn’t like that answer and it may be the sole reason my daughter will not apply ED.
Yes U should not apply ED. Y I asked the question that made everyone so upset.
I’m not buying that people drop like it’s no big deal. So I agree with your disbelief of this.
Yes legally u can leave unlike the old days when a school could make your life miserable but people should take their initial commitment as it was made.
But it’s also why I said the way people are saying the kid decides, everyone should and would apply ED - not sure why that upset people. They practically confirmed that to you.
So sorry for delayed response but I’ve been traveling. Why BU - my daughter is in film/television production throughout her HS years and has a friend currently involved at BU TV who has really sold her on the film/television degree and BU TV program. Emerson has a better film/TV program than BU, but after a visit, it was not a good match. We have family near Boston so if I am sending her back east, it is comforting knowing they will be nearby as opposed to sending my daughter to NYU, which after a visit, also did not feel like a match. NYC was overwhelming to us compared to Boston. To be clear, this is NOT the only college my daughter is considering, it’s just the one that seems like the best match overall. Also, whether our daughter goes west coast or east coast, we will be taking on some debt to finance her college education - that’s just a reality for us and it’s one we can live with.
BU financial aid office told me it’s case by case on home equity and then told me pointblank if she applies ED and doesn’t like the financial aid package she can back out. As though it was no big deal at all and students do it all the time.
Well…there you go.
I do think it’s important for you to have a clear annual budget for your daughter, so she understands what costs will work for your family and what costs won’t.
The risk with ED for you…you will get that one offer (if admitted) and won’t know if it’s the best net cost or close…or not. You won’t be able to compare financial aid and net costs amongst multiple admissions. You will be given a short window to accept or decline the BU ED offer. It’s sort of one and done. If you accept…you accept that net cost as well. If you decline, we’ll…you are done with BU. But maybe BU will be the lowest net cost. But since you will have declined the ED offer, it will be too late to accept it.
Did that make sense?
Yes! Makes absolute sense. So important to get a handle on all this now for that reason. You have been incredibly helpful and given us some important things to think about. THANK YOU!
