I am an international student from India and wish to apply to UToronto, Mcgill and UBC. My SAT score is 2210 760CR 770M 680W. My school marks are around 80% and am expecting 90+ in the final board exams. I will also be applying for financial aid. What are my chances of getting into any of these universities? Also how is the FA (both need and merit based) for internationals in these places.

Hello Karan! Canadian universities definitely offer merit-based scholarships. I received a $5K scholarship from U of T when I applied last year. I believe the scholarship criteria is at least a 90% average in your final year (Grade 12). For what it’s worth, I was educated according to the American system and my objective stats were/are 3.8 UW GPA (with very strong senior year grades) and 2350 SAT I (760 CR, 800 M, 790 W).

McGill’s scholarship criteria are a bit more strict. On top of meeting certain academic requirements, you also need to fill out a separate scholarship application that requires you to write two essays and to send in two letters of recommendation. I don’t know anything about scholarships at UBC.

Thanks a lot calgirl. I am sure I’ll be able to get 90 in the finals. Also I am taking the SAT again in December, hoping for 2300+. Your stats are pretty awesome. Where did you go then??

My story is rather complicated. I was accepted by the top UCs (Berkeley and UCLA) and U of T (obviously), but was rejected from all the Ivies I applied to (which made up the rest of my college list last year). I was preparing to go to Berkeley, but I was worried about the massive student loans I’d have to take out as an international student. Then I had the opportunity to consider a gap year, and that’s what I’m doing right now! I’ve done some really cool stuff this year that I most likely wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise.

As an aside, I’m also re-applying to colleges. I know many people have said that re-applying generally will not produce a different outcome, but my application this year is entirely different. I think my problem last year was that I was way too humble about myself on my application, and didn’t mention a couple of activities that I participated in and enjoyed, but didn’t think were worth talking about because I hadn’t done them for more than 2 years due to moving schools. Also, two of my recommendation letters this year are from different people, my Common App/activity/supplement essays are all different, etc. Basically, a lot has changed, and I thought I’d just give the Ivies another shot. So I’m currently in the same spot as this year’s seniors. I’m still applying for freshman admission.

The Ivies will most likely accept you this year. Best of luck
And I have the same problem on my application. I don’t how to write my ECs. Some of them are one-off things that I liked very much but never followed up. I just keep doing new stuff so I don’t have any EC depth. I am not even applying to the UCs because I know I won’t be able to go. Its Ivy or nothing But I have my doubts. If they rejected someone as great as you, they probably won’t even look at me. Still one can hope :)
