financial aid in USA for international students

Hi,

I want to study master of science in aerospace engineering in USA, as international applicant can I get any financial aid from the university since I have checked on the uni.. websites there are list of scholarships but not sure about the financial aid...

^Only if the department want you as GA, TA or RA. For example see http://grad.buffalo.edu/FinancialSupport/Scholarships_Fellowships.html

I dont think that masters degrees in eng’g are often funded. Are they?

Is that something new? 25+ years ago when I studied Software Engg, my aerospace company paid…same for my sibs. It seemed like the PhDs were funded, but not the MSs

Actually there are some funded masters programs in engineering. We know at least two kids who got masters degrees in engineering from UMass…fully funded with a stipend.

However, masters program funding if this sort is based on the strength if your application and the schools, desire to have you as part of their cohort.

i asked embry riddle for scholarship, they are ready to give graduate teaching assistant during ms aerospace engineering. Since i want to pursue this course but not yet confirmed which university is affordable and best.

You have to check each university and seek out which ones have financial aid, grants, stipends for the particular program that interests you. It can vary widely. Aerospace engineering, from what I understand, is a tough one to get any money, especially if you are looking to become a pilot.

@cptofthehouse actually I am interested in aircraft design and aerodynamics not really to become a pilot

Embry Riddle may be your answer then?

There is funding for other MA/MS programs as well. The University of Georgia, for instance, offers TAship and tuition waivers for MA/MS students in certain programs.

The big publics, who need a lot of TA’s for their giant undergrad classes, often are more willing to offer TA’ships to masters candidates.

Looks like Embry-Riddle as well (possibly due to not enough PhD’s to TA). So universities with few PhDs may as well.

Can someone tell me what is the average financial aid they can provide in aerospace engineering at masters level since the fees for international student seems to be expensive for this course … Normally taking the average , tuition fee with living expense comes up to 35000$ - 40000$ Per year.

My guess is that unless you get a teaching assistant position, the answer is zero.

There is no “average” amount of aid figure to provide. This varies from student to student, AND from college to college. While there are some funded masters programs in engineering, I will say…many, many are NOT funded…at all. And as an international student, you are not eligible for college loans here.

Getting funding depends largely on the strength of your application…but it also considers the strength of the applications of others to your program. If others have stronger applications, and the school desires the strongest applicants for funding…you would need to be that strong applicant. No way to predict the others who will be applying to a program from year to year.
