Financial Aid is OUT

[FinAid | Calculators | Advanced Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid)

For anyone intrested. This is a pretty cool tool for comparing packages. I am finding it helpful in trying to determine my real bottom line costs at given various awards.

Just thought I’d pass it along.

I’d just to rehash that I really hate my financial aid to Emory.

It was one of my top choices, too.

hilsa:

suggest you call the finaid office and ask them how they calculated your Institutional efc…and yes, it could be different than Fafsa (and probably is for most people).

i have a good package for Emory-Oxford, i guess:
-grants: 34600, work study: 2000 and loans: 5500! it’s great! ( questbridge appl) also do you know if the health insurance is included? or do i need to take one myself? do you know the real cost of the school? it’s never the same amount depending where you look…
-American gave me pretty much the same package.

Oxford
Tuition & fees 31, 862
Room & board 8,924
Insurance 2,000 - mandatory
Books 1,100
Personal 2,000 - spending, travel, clothes, entertainment…
Total 45,886

looks like you’ve been awarded 42,100 so you will pay a difference of 3,786 for the first year out of pocket to Oxford or approximately $315.00 per month.

Emory
Tuition & fees 38,036
Room & board 10,896
Insurance 2,000 - mandatory
Books 1,100
Personal 2,000
Total 54,732

Emory won’t budge on their packages. The lady I talked to was quite rude, when I had a legitimate argument (that I had gotten Pell Grants of $5300 to every other (5) school I applied to, but had gotten no such grant of any amount from Emory – she said I didn’t qualify). She continually said, “we THOROUGHLY poured through your application, and this is what you qualify for” – EFC was about $15,000 – only given $11,500 (mostly loans).

By law the maximum amount of EFC that is eligible for a Pell Grant is $4,617. You said your EFC was about 15,000. You are not qualified to receive a pell grant.

i thought i read on the boards that the $2,000 insurance can be waived if you sign something

I didn’t see the insurance item as a line item on the COA (link within the OPUS), but is it included in the Living Expenses line?

Fall 2009
Category Description Amount
Tuition Expenses 18,750.00
Fees 268.00
Living Expenses 6,048.00
Books and Supply Expenses 550.00
Transportation Expenses 450.00
Term Total 26,066.00

Spring 2010
Category Description Amount
Tuition Expenses 18,750.00
Fees 268.00
Living Expenses 6,048.00
Books and Supply Expenses 550.00
Transportation Expenses 450.00
Term Total 26,066.00
Total Cost of Attendance 52,132.00

There is a requirement for health insurance; however, the requirement can be satisfied through a family’s own qualified health plan, in which the student would so designate (during registration process). Otherwise, if the student does NOTHING (i.e., does not do the waiver, likely via participation in parents’ health insurance plan), then Emory will automatically tack on that charge as part of COA (on OPUS).

All of this will be made clear to students later on, but I know how PATIENT you all are ;-)

… and so here’s a link: [Emory : Campus Life : Student Health and Counseling Services](<a href=“Error 404 | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>Error 404 | Emory University | Atlanta GA)

emory really isnt budging with their finaid, but on the plus side for me, UPenn is so i guess i better pay my deposit there soon

does anyone know how the EA Loan Replacement Grant works? Is it money coming out of your own pocket?

grants are not loans. grants are given to you no need to pay back. and loans are credits you need to pay back. but i don’t know what you mean about “EA loan replacement grant”? on my D’s package i have listed some grants, some loans, some work study and some scholarships… but what i don’t really know is if it’s an estimate or the real package?

Thanks Lavieen for clearing that up. The “EA loan replacement grant” is what it said on my financial aid package when i checked opus today. I think its the real package because there is an option to “accept” ur package. There is nothing i noticed that may hint that it is an estimate. I definitely hope its the actual package since the only thing I will need to do is 2k worth of work study  .

^ very nice!! questbridge has worked for you!! i don’t know yet for us… i think we have only an estimate where do you go to accept? i don’t have that link.

Hmmm doesn’t sound like it’s worth even trying to negotiate. That’s too bad. When a great number of students turn them down because of their stingy financial aid, maybe they will stop being rude and get the message. Guess its NU or Grinnell for me then.

Lavieen, there is green button stating “accept/decline awards” right when i view my awards. u cant miss it unless it obviously doesn’t say it for u. I can send u a screen shot if u want

^ i don’t have “accept/decline awards”! if you can send me a screen shot i will appreciate and i will call them tomorrow… thank you. (i hope they didn’t forget me!!)

If I never applied for financial aid, would I have to wait until next year to apply?

I plan to call tomorrow to negotiate my FA package. I got 26k (excluding loans and work study) so I still need another 26k. However, from Vassar, excluding loans and grants, I got 43k. Vassar’s Pell Grant was also 3,000 higher than Emory’s. I don’t know how two schools could calculate an EFC so differently? Also, child support is going down by 5k this year and my dad is making half of what he did last year. Anyway, thats my argument. Wish me luck!
