Hi everyone,

I am currently a community college student finishing up my first year this spring. I live in California and plan on transferring out to a university sometime next year. I am a full time student right now.

I live with my parents.

Is there any type of FAFSA/government grant that would make me eligible for housing aid? Even like $400 a month or so...

I want to move out...

Is there any possible way to do this?

For reference, my GPA is 3.73 and my major is Political Science.

I don't even know if this question makes sense or if it is relevant in any way. The financial aid office at my school isn't very helpful and I have heard that there is some sort of housing financial aid out there that does not need to be paid back.

Please help.

**p.s I am totally not procrastinating right now. Biology report, biology lecture hw due in just a fewww....:/

Federally funded need based aid is largely based on your PARENTS incomes and assets. If you qualify for the maximum Pell Grant (your EFC would need to be $0), you would be entitled to $5600. You are also entitled to the Direct loan. If you are a third year student, you would get $7500. These two items would be disbursed to your college. They would first be used to cover tuition and fees. And then room and board if you live in college housing. However, $11,000 isn’t enough to cover all of that…as you know.

Are you a CA resident who is Calgrant eligible?

@thumper1

I am eligible for the Pell Grant. I am waiting for the finalized confirmation from my school’s financial aid office to receive it.

I am not a third year student, I am only finishing up my first year this Spring.

I don’t know what a CalGrant is…I have heard of it…

Are you an instate resident of California? Did you graduate from a CA High School? Is your family income less than $80,000 a year?

ETA…I believe the Calgrant application deadline has passed for the upcoming year.

If you are going to be a second year student, you would get $6500 in Direct Loans.

@thumper1

And yes, I googled it…it has. It was the beginning of March.

And wow, thank you so much for your help and the detailed information…!!

I still don’t think $6,500 a year would do it though…haha

You were asking for $400/month. $6500 is more than that.
