One of my parents works at a university, and because of that, I receive a substantial tuition grant to any college that cost more than an in-state college. However, this grant will not roll over to room/board and other expenses. I will most-likely be receiving financial aid at most of my target schools. Will it be possible to request that this aid go towards room/board or other expenses instead of tuition?

It really depends on the schools and the nature of any other financial aid you would get. For institutional aid, the tuition grant most likely would go to reduce your need first, not your expected contribution. So you may not get the amount of additional finaid you may be expecting. If you do get any finaid offers in excess of tuition, you probably should contact the school’s finaid office to verify the aid can go toward other expenses. Some students do even get full rides covering tuition, R&B and even more. So it is possible but will depend on your situation, the school and the nature of the finaid.

Be aware that scholarships/grants in excess of tuition, mandatory fees and required books and supplies are taxable income to the student.

If a tuition grant can be used at any school, I’m going to guess it will be treated like an outside scholarship by many schools. Ask how it will be handled. Will it stack on top of other aid you might receive from that institution.

We use tuition exchange, which is an expense to the host college rather than the exporting institution. They are very clear that while tuition will be covered, state and fed grants will be applied first for students who are eligible and tuition exchange will cover the balance. The student is not eligible for any other institutional aid.

Most of the colleges I’m looking at are private colleges costing $40-45,000 in tuition before accounting for other expenses. I will receive around $33,000 with the grant, (for reference it is the duke tuition grant: [Duke Human Resources: Children’s Tuition Grant](http://www.hr.duke.edu/benefits/education/tuition_grant/)), while financial aid calculators estimate that I will receive $25-30,000. Does this mean that I may receive no financial aid, because I am already getting more than expected?

If your financial need is 30k, and you receive a 33k tuition grant, it is highly unlikely that you will receive any institutional aid because your need has been met. Your parents will have to pay for your room and board (which would be the case anyway because if you were eligible for need based aid, it would have been applied to tuition first)

Most likely, that is what it means. However, if you were to receive a merit scholarship that is not a tuition scholarship (rather, it is unrestricted), you will be able to use that in addition to the Duke CTG. Look at the examples that are provided on the web link … you can see how it works.
