carsh: I can sympathize with you completely. GW is my D’s dream school, but the funding will probably not work out. Their FA office is abysmal and unprofessional, which only compounds the matter, and makes me suspicious that the whole school experience will be a struggle at every turn. We will appeal the FA offer but I doubt that it will be seriously considered. It is surprising that such a supposedly highly ranked school operates this way.

well, my experience with financial aid was … so-so.
GW isnt a school that promises to meet your need (they definitely didn’t meet mine).
i visited on monday during april visit day and the financial aid offices were PACKED. we had to sign in our names on a piece of paper and my name was called about 1.5 hours later. my FA didnt change at all and the lady seemed cold and just unmoving. either way, my parents will probably be able to pay it off so i wasn’t too upset by it but i know people who were only offered 5,000 out of the 60k .

i guess its different for everyone. but i do agree that making students wait so long to see their FA is unprofessional and will affect the yield

Be careful to make such generalizations based on what you received. I know many students who received great financial aid, and some who didn’t. Also, artist123, GW actually has a lot of minority students. Sure, it’d be nice if they notified students earlier, but it’s still early April; there’s plenty of time before you have to decide by May 1st.

Adababy, my point was not really disappointment in the amount of financial aid (my D received a decent amount, although much more elsewhere), rather, it was our disappointment in the communication (or lack thereof) about the financial aid piece of the overall admissions decision.

Phillydad, looks like we’re in the same situation! GW is clearly a good school, but maybe issues similar to the financial aid disorganization lie under the surface in other areas…guess we’ll never know! Best of luck to your D!

my GW web account doesn’t have this financial aid tab that everyone is talking about… where do I go find out if I got aid… is this FAFSA aid that people are talking about?

We were also at the admitted students day on monday. Daughter loved the school in all respects. We visited the FA office and it was absolutely packed. We signed up and were told the wait would be 30-40 minutes. After waiting for almost an hour we were told it would be at least ANOTHER hour to see a FA counselor. We left but were told to call on tuesday and we would be able to speak with someone. I called on tuesday morning and they said that they would call me back. I’m still waiting…

If they treat admitted prospective students like this, it make me wonder what awaits enrolled students after they turn down other offers and commit to GWU.

Also, one other thing to consider is that just as GW has fixed tuition, GW will not decrease your financial aid offer while you are there. Nice thing to know, especially hearing stories about many friends getting their aid offer significantly decreased from their college after their freshman year, and having to go through the nightmare of fighting with their FA offices to be able to still attend.

@keabie18, this is a real concern. Where did you find this info?

keabie18: You are right, but you kinda mixed up the terms.

I went to a GW reception recently and the rep said that tuition is locked in for 10 semesters.

Haha thanks wmurphy126. I just remember hearing it on my tour.

yes, fixed tuition. But how similar is the financial aid award from year to year?

Momof02: please reread my quote for your answer.

thanks for the info.

I second this! I had many problems with the financial aid office, despite being offered a guaranteed grant. The amount of red-tape is ridiculous, I literally spent all summer on the phone with them and they still screwed up my financial aid horrendously.

That makes no sense.

I was offered more here than U of M or St. John’s which is a private monastary for Pete’s sake.
