Rumor has it that Middlebury College will only offer financial aid to int'l applicants who graduated from UWC ( United World College). I heard this from a friend of mine that since Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, Middlebury will only consider granting FA to int'l students who were UWC graduates. in other words- not a single chance for other intl applicants seeking FA from the college unless he or she is a UWC graduate.
I hope someone on CC can refute me on this one... but if this is ever true, future intl midd-wishfuls who didnt graduate from UWC are bound to be rejected for FA requests?
Any input appreaciated! Only if someone can tell me my friend is wrong.
Thanks!

Sammyw: no, this is silly. Lehman had nothing to do with Midd’s financial aid other than it was part of the huge financial collapse that hurt Middlebury and all colleges that had an endowment that supported general operations (which includes funding for financial aid). This seems to be just that – a rumor. Financial aid did become more difficult for internationals in 2009, but it is still awarded to students who did not attend UWC.

Do the math: If there are 55-65 international students in the entering class (the past 3 years), and 20-25 are from the UWC, then there are 30-40 more internationals in a class, and a good percentage of Middlebury internationals require financial aid (and Middlebury meets demonstrated need per those financial forms). That means there are of course non-UWC students getting financial aid. Hope the simple math helps.

Let’s dispel this rumor quickly. I don’t have the facts to support a denial of a ridiculous rumor. Someone with the actual facts please confirm what my gut knows is true.

PantherPride99 and urbanslaughter- Trust me that I do want this rumor to be just “rumor”. But so far as I was concerned, all the applicants who got into Middlebury with FA were all UWC graduates. In fact the friend who I heard this rumor from was pretty resourceful and couldnt just be making a ridiculous conclusion. Now im starting to thinking that probably there is a regional difference? Or probably this is true for applicants who are on the verge of rejection for FA request?

This is most certainly nonsense. Middlebury has a financial aid budget for international students that is larger than those found at most LACs. The 113 UWC students currently enrolled at Midd receive their financial aid funding from an entirely different source–the Davis United World College Scholars Program ([Davis UWC Scholars](http://www.davisuwcscholars.org/institutions/middlebury)).

If you look through posts from this past March and April, you’ll see plenty of posts from internationals not affiliated with UWC who got extremely generous packages from Midd.

arcadia- thank you for your reply!! I’m starting to think probably this is a regional thing…

Sammy: “all the applicants who got into Middlebury with FA were all UWC graduates” How would or any of us know who “all the applicants” were? As Arcadia said, and as I tried to show, this is absurd — do the math: are you or your resourceful friend saying that all international students at Midd, including the 30+ non UWC internationals are/were no-need students? Doubtful. This makes no sense, but if it is based on presuming to know all the international applicants and their aid awards, then explains a lot.
