Financial Aid packages?

How much is R&B at St. Michaels?

how much is R&B at URI?

I know that you don’t want to go to URI, so it’s looking like St Michaels will be your choice IF your relative’s money will pay for R&B and books.

It’s about the same for both URI and st. Mikes. Uri prob would be cheaper but where am I going to get a better edu?

What is your major? English?

If R&B is about the same, then go to St. M

You don’t want to go to URI, so you’d be unhappy there.

greenpaisley46…can you earn some money over the summer? You need a cushion.

The best deal is the school to which you have to pay the least including pay back of the loans.

greenpaisley46…

St Michael’s College COA

Tuition and fees … $36,240
Room and board … $9,030
Books and supplies … $1,200
Estimated personal expenses … $450 (This is a very low estimate)

Transportation expenses…$450 (This is also low)

Estimated Total… $47,370

Can you give us the exact breakdown of your SMC’s aid pkg?

SMC grant…
Pell Grant …5550
other Grant…
Stafford loans…5500
Perkins loans… 2000 (?)
work-study…
anything else???..

21,000 SMC scholarship
7500 need based grant(didn’t specify about pell just stated need based grant)
Work study 1800
7500 loan

I honestly plan on transfering after my sophomore year though to notre dame or something if I get accepted. I know I can get a 3.8.

You need to call and ask about Pell. Either they will add that in (5550) or adjust your current aid (adding/subtracting) to get to the same 7500 grant.

$28,500 in free money from SMC
$07,500 in loans

$10,000 money from relatives

$46,000 in funds…you’re about $1-2k short.

So, you just about have enough. What can you earn over the summer? you need to have more than just the minimum.

The 1800 in W/S is for personal expenses so we won’t count that.

greenpaisley46, you might want to look to transfer to schools with HIGHER transfer acceptance rates than the ones you have mentioned…ND and HC have taken very few students as transfers in recent years.

We know a student who did transfer after freshman year but she transferred to Smith…which also meets full need. You might want to “broaden” your search of schools for transfer purposes.

The other thing…you may find that after you get to college, you actually LIKE where you are. That happens too.

greenpaisley46, if transferring is something you are planning, that is fine. A lot of kids transfer. Do well at the current school and it would up your chances. I believe that the highly selective colleges do have a “soft spot” for those transferring out of a school that a student outgrows academically. That is a reason that does have them sit up and notice. So looking at school at that time, that meet full need for transfers would be something to consider. Now is not the time as you have to acclimate and kick some academic tail in order to be in position to have that option. Things also change from school to school over time, so a list you compile now may not be relevant in a couple of years.

The most important thing for you to do now is to pick the best school among your choices, that won’t leave you financially stressed and prepare to enjoy your freshman year there and do well.

You will have to report this on the FAFSA/CSS profile next year as monies paid on your behalf.
