So the Odyssey scholarships are not on the fin aid letters during the EA estimate? Not that I qualify but I would assume that they would put them on there.

mUser, thanks for all your help. I've been soo busy with college apps that i havent had time to look up any scholarship info. (not good, i know)

How close has online calculators been to your guys actual estimated EFC amount?

And for the people who have received their estimated aid packages, how much of the aid is in grants and how much in loans/work study. Following the Collegeboard stats 82% of aid is grants while 18% is loans/work study. Does this hold true for your situation?

Of the aid I got, 81.09% was grants and 18.9% was loans; there was no mention of work-study. Chicago estimated that my family could pay about 15k a year, exactly what online calculators have shown.

Thank you Miles. They didn't mention work study at all? I bet UChicagos FinAid dept basically assumed you would be working. Because following their finaid website it seems they assume you will work while trying to manage school.

There is an expected student contribution that shows up on the FA award -- that's where they expect you to work (assuming the Stafford loans aren't already built into your FA package). S works 10 hours a week at an on-campus job, not through work-study. He landed it his first day on campus. There is plenty of stuff available. Chicago does limit students to 15 hours a a week, which really is about the limit of what one could do while keeping up with schoolwork and a social life. He also works during the summer and takes out Staffords.

I was going through some other fin aid threads and it says you have to add back your 401k contribution. Where do I need to add it back in the EFC calculators. My parents are not helping me at all with this so I have to learn all about fin aid haha. Thanks

anyone else have info about financial aid? i'm curious to see how Chicago's aid was in general =)

I got 30500 in grants and about 7725 in loans.
We make barely above 60K a year.

I guess it's pretty decent. :)

To those accepted, congratulations. I would also be interested in what UChicago is showing for 2009/2010 tuition in financial aid packages. Info is not available online yet.

15k in grants, a bit over 7k in loans. Income is around 140k a year. One sibling already in college.

I'm very happy with the estimate. :)

we got 33500 in grant and 7750 in loans...we make about ~70, because my dad is unemployed due to real estate getting killed.

Seems like Chicago is doing okay with their fin aid packages this year. Not on the level of HYPSM but they are def getting better. I just really hope my package comes through strong.

D received 33400K in grants and 7225 in loans.

It would be cool if you when you post your packages if you could include the avg income or income bracket (unless you don't feel comfortable) or your EFC along with any special circumstances (million dollar home equity, another student in college, high assets, student trust.) It will help out others in deciding if Chicago is financially an option.

Income 140k-range-ish.
Grant: $18,400.
Loans: $7225.

Happiness level: YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY! SOUND THE WEDDING BELLS, I'M MARRYING UCHICAGO (provided the estimates are pretty much what I'm getting in April)

Thats great Virtue. I still haven't gotten mine but I turned in a couple things late so I was expecting it.

Odyssey is amazing and is not factored in yet along with a lot of other things. And hey everyone keepin mind that you can get aid other places too. check out websites like fastweb that help you fins grants and scholarships to apply for.
I have not gotten my aid yet but i am still not waiting to fill out outside scholarships to lessen my burden.
My parents ar 60K or less and recently out of bankruptcy. they took out 10k to send my older bro to SIU Carbondale and can't help me so i am praying for the best but I will find a way.
Just say positive and stay in touch with the FA office.
Back to Odyssey. Basically if your family makes less than 60K a year you don't have to get loans at all. Your loan requirement is replaced by grants. 60K to 75K get half their loan requirements replaced. so if you are getting and estimate that has you at 12K in loans and your family makes 45K your will have 0 loans. Say your family rakes in 70K this year and your estimat is 12K. Well you'll be @ about 6K instead.
Also don't forget federal aid!
Come on guys its call the estimate for a reason. lol. The sky is not fall just yet chicken little. But if the situation doesn't improve I will be right there with you rioting at the FA office as we go into debt. lol.

Does Chicago send out the FA packages once they receive everything? I mean I sent everything in end of November (I know it was after the deadline, but they said it was OK) and I haven't gotten anything so far...
