Hello everyone , so I just got my financial aid award letter and they are only giving me 5,765 and loans but I don't really want loans (well no one wants loans lol ) anyway I looked at the scholarships that Penn State offers and some where based of financial need and grades , I called the student aid office but they told me that I will only be able to get work study this makes no sense I thought that I would qualify , is any one else having this issue ? they also have me as off campus because they have no more dorms at the moment , do any of you guys know how long the waiting list is ?
Can someone please tell me how they are planning to pay for Penn State ? ( I got into the Altoona campus by the way and im an Out of State student )

Thank You So Much I really appreciate it

What did you think you would qualify for? As a state school the bulk of Penn State’s need based aid is awarded to in-state students (whose parents’ tax dollars go to support the school) and even for in-state students financial aid is usually far from generous. If you do not have the savings and your parents are unwilling or unable to take out loans you will need to consider some other schools. Did you apply to your own state’s public school(s)?

@1moremom I thought that I would qualify for the need based scholarships and academic scholarships that they have. But I contacted them again and they said there is nothing else I can do but keep applying to scholarships , and I did I apply to some state schools here in New jersey but I guess I will have to apply for more. Thanks for ur reply

I would not recommend paying OOS tuition for a branch campus of PSU.

Why would you think you would qualify for financial aid as an out-of-state student? Even in-state students generally get offered very little aid beyond loans. And you’re considering paying OOS rates to go to Altoona? Why?

Yeah, my daughter is a Pennsylvania resident, has great grades, SAT scores, job & extras and she received nothing other than loans (we are an average income family). So…she had to go to an expensive out of state private that was 10K (after aid) less than PSU. Go figure? Apparently you need a nearly perfect SAT score and perfect grades in all AP classes to get any type of Scholarship. “No Penn State” here…haha
