My daughter’s financial aid award was posted today at My ASU. Although, it was not so much financial aid, but rather the opportunity to borrow large amounts of money at high interest rates.

^ same here. Not that I expected otherwise, but they seem to encourage FAFSA submission as a means to establish legal residency.

What do you mean establish legal residency???

Oh, not AZ residency, USA legal residency, you know how AZ is about the immigration issues. They have some law…
Anyway, they suggest using the FAFSA to establish this. Since I was doing it anyway for some other more expensive schools and it was free to send, I sent it to them. Otherwise you can send them other legal documents instead. Here’s the link. It’s one more thing to do, like sending the MMR immunization record, and math placement. But they don’t advertise it right on the main application ‘to do’ page since mayhap someone might think it a bit uncalled for. Not their choice though.

I think not everyone has to do this, just if you want to get aid that has state funding, and my D has scholarship from them.

I have two going to college this year and one in her third year… Any suggestions on how to pay for college

Too bad. It’s hard, one of the big problems of our time. My sister took a year off between undergrad and med school to save money for that, and we all worked way too many hours when we were in undergrad. That was back when college was comparatively cheap. I’m thankful D is choosing a school where she has a large merit award, and that there is a school with such to choose. Now just have S15 left and so far he seems content to go to the state school 2 miles down the road (UW-Madison) and live at home if necessary. Older brother went there as well. But D was already eager to go somewhere away from home years ago. Three at once, yikes!

I know… Yikes. The boys are twins. One got in most everywhere but SDSU was his number one choice-denied. He has a scholarship to ASU and thats his second choice. The other twin not so lucky… ASU is the only place so far where he got (he is happy about that) and Sac State but doesn’t want to stay too close to home. SFSU is still in the works but even that is a far reach.

I guess you are talking about California schools? Not familiar with all the acronyms. Haven’t investigated them, just know of the top few. D didn’t want to apply to any southern schools. ASU and a couple of SE schools got thrown in as afterthoughts since possible good scholarships for her. She discovered she loves the SW climate when we visited, but too late to apply to any other schools in the area.

Tonypa- I got the Parent loan too… With my S scholarship and his FAFSA-- he is at 11,500. That’s at least half of the tuition. Will probably pay for housing and meal out of pocket and loan the rest. What about you if I may ask?

We’re OOS. Estimated cost of attendance is $39,009. We have the $13,000 NAmU President Scholarship, $5500 Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan, and $20,509 Parent PLUS Loan. We would have considered a subsidized student loan since the interest rates are much better, and the interest doesn’t start accruing until the student isn’t full time anymore. But with the interest rates what they are for the unsubsidized loans, I’ll pay out of pocket for as long as I can. That’s ok for Year 1, but I’m probably on a long journey here with two more kids to follow. The FAFSA system isn’t set up for long range planning, which I understand, but it just doesn’t work in my advantage right now. This pretty much confirms what I had been hearing about financial aid, but I was keeping my fingers crossed nonetheless.

Tonypa- At least you got a better merit scholarship. My S is doing so well since last year. Three semester of 4.0, but he still fell short. I told him once he is in for him to look for more scholarship opportunities. His brother (twin) is not so fortunate, but I would rather have both of them in the same place. To make matters worse, my daughter was accepted to Harvard for a summer internship for the summer. The tickets alone are going to kill us. My husband and I are well off, but paying for three is hard.

Good luck MOM1006 as you move forward. The Harvard summer internship sounds exciting.
