Financial Aid Programs

For the past year or so I've been in love with University of Redlands, and it's my first choice for colleges if I get accepted. The only trouble is that the tuition is rather high...and I'm curious to see if I'd even have a chance of being able to pay for it.

So for those of you who currently go to University of Redlands, or who have gone to it in the past, what is the financial aid like? They don't seem to have very many scholarships compared to bigger schools, but can it still be affordable?

Do you know what your gpa and SAT scores are? Also where are you from?

My S will be a freshman at Redlands this fall-- in fact he leaves in 2 weeks! His scholarship / FA package was excellent-- one of the best of all the schools he applied to. It put the total price very close to State U price. A few things that might help:

Be sure to apply for the Achievement award. All you do is send a separatelist/resume of your activities, awards, etc. SOme one else said it is not necessary to send the separate list, but my S did and he got a nice award from that. He mailed it separately be regular mail (not through the common app)

ALso Redlands only uses Sophomore/Jr/ First semester Sr grades to calculate merit awards (depending when your first semester senior grades are available) So they don’t count freshman grades. For my S this was very nice becasue his freshman year gpa was way lower than the rest of HS.

If you can visit be sure to do that and include an interview. It is not a stressful interview-- just a chat with admissions. I think showing interest is important

If you post your info others can add their opinion as well, or if you have other questions post them. Good luck!

Thank you a lot idahomom! From what you said it sounds like your son is going to have an excellent year, and financial aid from Redlands is good.

I’m from Michigan, my cumulative GPA is 3.4 on a 4.0 scale but my school’s courses are all above average in difficulty. My ACT score was a 33, with the subsections being E: 33, M:35, R:36, S:29, and Writing 10.

Thanks so much again :)

Redlands has been very generous with merit aid for my son. He received the Presidential and Achievement scholarships which have been renewed each year. He also got a small need-based grant the first 3 years when his brother was in college. I expected the grant to go away the 4th year when his brother graduated because our FAFSA EFC was greater than the cost of attendance, but he got a small amount in year 4 as well.

It seems like most of my son’s friends have scholarships as well. Keeping your GPA up is key to having scholarships renewed every year.

With your GPA and ACT scores you should have a very good chance of receiving merit aid.

I think you have a very good chance of getting some good merit aid based on your grades and ACT score. I also think it is an advantage to come from a different state than CA since most schools, including Redlands, like to have students from all over.

I would say definitely apply and see what happens–do you think you will be able to visit some time? Good luck and post if you have other questions.
