I know that most colleges aren't need blind for international students. I'm not sure if I am eligible for need. When the common application asks if I am applying for financial aid should I check yes or no? I don't want to diminish my chances of getting in by checking yes, but I also don't want to miss out on any available money. Also, are merit-based scholarships included when they ask if I'm applying for financial aid?

What is the point of getting in if you have no money to pay for the education?
If you need ANY kind of money (merit, grants, loans) CHECK the box

i have enough to pay for everything for about a year and a half right now... what should i do?

you should still apply because at some colleges if you do not apply freshman year, then you will not be eligible for financial aid in subsequent years. Check the financial aid policies at your school

applying for financial aid shouldn't effect your application status.

oh, applying for FA definitely affect your status. At some schools, they even take a different review of your application. But well, you still have to apply: now or never :) You should divide the money you have now into 4 and that's what you can pay for each year ----> you're in financial need.

So how is it applying to the University of California system? Right now my mom is having trouble figuring out what to do with financial aid. I have educational stocks and my mom has a pretty big line of credit on our house because the mortgage was paid off with my dad's life insurance. I heard that these things could count against me. My mom really doesn't make too much money. About 40k but then she's got all these business deductions. She is planning on buying a new car this year and isn't sure if it would be better to donate it and write it off or to sell it. Also she bought land in Mexico and is thinking about putting my name on the trust. Would that effect my status to get financial aid? I receive fee waivers and other aid through the VA. I'm really confused! My mom wants me to apply for student loans instead of basically charging her equity card with my school. Please help!
