Does anybody know if you can accept certain aspects of your fin aid package and reject others?

My kid wants to accept grant aid offered and the subsidized student loans, but I (his mom) am not in a position to take on the parent loans that have been figured into the total package. We'll make other arrangements to make up the $ difference. (Rather than pay crazy interest forever on a parent loan, I'll get another part time job and so will my kid --after he has settled into UCSC.) Is there a way to do this partial acceptance/partial decline thing online or do you have to call or email? Thanks.

i haven’t gotten anything for financial aid from UCSC but I know with UCR i just logged into a website and it gave me the option to pick what i wanted, I think it was the same for UCM as well. Have your son log into his portal and check the financial aid part if not just call them and get instructions.

As has been the case with each school that offered me aid, my offer from SC (just received tonight) had line-by-line accept/decline buttons. You only need to accept the loans and/or aid that you want. You certainly won’t be compelled to take a loan that you don’t want.

I was very happy with their offer, by the way. On top of my Cal Grant and Fafsa, they offered me about 15k in ucsc and uc grants, plus several thousands more in loans (loans that I, too, will not accept).

Once aid offer is available on the student portal page -which should be soon, it will be listed & broken down showing dollar amounts, ie: grants, Perkins loan, subsidized loan, unsubsidized student loan, parent PLUS loan, work study. Your student accepts/declines each piece of the aid offer individually for the school year. Student can even change mind & alter the accept/decline status later, as long as the disbursement date hasn’t passed, or even accept partial amounts of the offer & not the full amount.
