Financial Aid Question

Hey guys!

So I was wondering...I live in NJ and I'm applying to UVa for regular decision. I know the out-of-state tuition is a lot higher than in-state tuition. However, my family is willing to move to Virginia if that's the school I go to.

Do any of you know how many years of residence is required in order to get the in-state tuition benefits?

I've tried to call the financial aid department many times, but they don't answer. I could email them...but I thought it would be faster if I asked CC.

Thanks!

This gives information regarding qualifications for Virginia domicile. These must be met for 12 months prior to consideration. It gives you basic information but you really need to talk to individual universities to see how they handle this as there are differences.

This has been discussed many times here, even within the past few days.

And moving to a state with the desired intent of trying to obtain in-state tuition is not a “financial aid” question.

Also - residency is not handled by the Fin Aid office so trying to call them wouldn’t help.

The office that handles this issue is called the Office of Virginia Status:

[Virginia Status, U.Va.](http://www.virginia.edu/provost/vastatus/)

[FAQ, Virginia Status, U.Va.](http://www.virginia.edu/provost/vastatus/faq.html)

And don’t think they have not run into this before:

“If your parent(s) move to Virginia while you are in school … petition for a change of status effective 12 months after the move. If you entered classified as an out-of-state student, you must present clear and convincing evidence to rebut the presumption that you are residing in the State primarily to attend school. Residence or physical presence in Virginia primarily to attend the University does not entitle you to in-state tuition rates.”

Thank you both for responding.

And GolfFather, am I imagining things or do you sound critical of my question? I didn’t know it was against the rules for my family to move to a state (which in itself is a big commitment) to get less tuition. The difference of in-state vs. out-of-state is tremendous for my family.

UVa is generous with need based aid for out of state students. Of course, that may involve a mix of a work study job, subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans, and Perkins loans, in addition to AccessUVa grants.

GolfFather - The information you provided was excellent and I’m sure will be a great help to the OP.

FWIW, I did a search on the forum and the last time I could find this topic come up was in mid-August and the students situation was completely different. Perhaps you mean that the topic comes up on cc quite a bit (which is does)? If so, there’s no global search that I’m aware of that the OP should have utilized, however each state is different, as is each university, and the OP had a valid question specific to UVa.
