Financial Aid question

I’m listed as a dependent under my mother and she makes an income of 12k or below.
I’ll be attending an in-state Florida University after getting my AA this semester.
For someone who is experienced with the process, can someone give me a ball-park figure of what I could expect for financial aid? This is excluding any type of loan or scholarship btw.

Are you eligible for Bright Futures? Someone from FL will need to explain that.

At your income level, you should have a $0 EFC per fafsa. That would give you a $5800 or so Pell Grant, and a $6500 Direct Loan for second year or $7500 for third year students.

Have you already applied to the four year schools? Have you submitted your FAFSA form to them?

Did you do a fafsa for your community college? What federally funded aid have you been receiving?

To make a long story short I was granted financial aid Freshman year, but went through some medical issues which lowered my completion rate below the threshold to receive any more aid. I’ll be above that threshold for this year and with my Junior year coming up I have everything submitted except my FASFA because my mom wants to do it herself and keeps putting it off. I’m probably not eligible for bright futures by the way unless they give it out by a semester to semester basis. I’ll look into it. Thank you! @thumper1

You need to get your FAFSA submitted. If you gain acceptance to a college…it sounds like you need to know your financial aid to make a decision about attending. So…that needs tomget done.

In addition to completing the FAFSA, you should order a tax transcript.

Since you don’t qualify for BF, then is there a FL univ that you can commute to???

It’s very likely that all you’ll get is:

$5700 Pell Grant
$6500 or 7500 student loan …depending on soph or jr status
$2000 for work study

The above is not enough to cover tuition, dorm, meal plan, books etc.

So if there’s a FL public that you can commute to, that may work.

Pell grants will be $5920 for 2017-18.

You probably would have received $1-2k as and SEOG and perhaps another $1K as a florida SEOG, but those funds are awarded by most schools to those who file the FAFSA earliest. You can ask if there are any funds remaining, but the early filers get those funds. This is true for work study funds too. The school may not have any funds left to award you work study.

If you did not get BF out of high school, you will not get it now.

It is important to file your FAFSA immediately. The school cannot process your FA without it.

If you did not make satisfactory academic progress while at the community college, you may still be on hold to receive any federal funds. Make sure you clear all that with the community college and with the 4 year college.

Great info.

The student still needs to include a FL public that he can commute to because things like SEOG and WS are never guaranteed.

Thanks guys, all this information is extremely helpful!
