Financial aid question

My son is in state, no merit but we are wondering if possibly any other financial aid might be forthcoming. When? Do they typically hold off until the end of March? Also, would the adams scholarship stack or take away (because of less need?)

Hi - this doesn’t answer any of your questions, but fwiw… my kid was accepted 12/7 EA, and was told to submit FAFSA by March 1, 2022 for ‘priority’ consideration.
The Adams Scholarship, as I’m sure you know, only covers the $1,720/year tuition. Its such a small amount of the $32k or so total cost.
I know, I’m no help. I’d call and ask - you can sign up on UMA’s website for a call back or zoom chat with financial aid (if the hold time is too long, as it was today for me).

Thanks! Yeah I did fafsa back in October and I agree the $1720 isn’t much, sadly. I think that is why I am wondering if UMass even offers other financial aid. Not even sure if we qualify for any need based, but I will have 3 in college next year so every bit helps!

UMASS offers need based aid if you qualify and fill out the FAFSA. You will have to wait and see how much is loans and how much isn’t, for your particular award letter.
If you got the Adam’s scholarship that would bring your Estimated Cost of Attendance down (as would any scholarship). Need based aid in a nutshell boils down to your income plus assets vs estimated cost of attendance of college (for how many in your household).
I don’t know exactly when notification of need based aid comes out, but I suspect it is shortly (probably after the FA office disperses Spring term aid to current students). Hope this helps

Thanks

When will they tell you how much Loan u can get?

If you are talking about the federal direct student loan, first years can take a max of $5,500. That can be partially subsidized based upon the family’s level of need, but the total loan amount doesn’t change (Just the subsidized/unsubsidized ratio).

Parents can basically take unlimited parent plus loans, with the exception of some possible situations like bankruptcy. Some parents may also get private loans from banks, credit unions, or the colleges themselves.

We applied FAFFSA and CSS. Anything else need to be done to get need-based aid?

FAFSA , and CSS Profile (where needed), should be all you need for colleges to create a financial aid package for you, and based on the NPC estimates you should have a decent idea of what your financial aid package is likely to be. Some schools have highly accurate NPCs, others less so.

Note that FAFSA simply determines eligibility to federal financial aid money (Pell Grant, work-study, direct student loans, etc.), students don’t receive financial aid money from FAFSA.
