not to delve into somewhat sensitive territory, but does anyone know of any cases in which a student whose parents made >200,000 dollars a year got financial aid from Yale? If it helps, I have a sister whose college years WILL NOT overlap with mine, and I don't really have any extenuating circumstances like illness in the family, loss of employment, etc.

just wondering if it's even worth it to file a FAFSA and all that jazz...my parents had saved up more than enough for my education, but with the financial crisis my education fund has been cut to 1/2. all told, i just feel really bad making my parents siphon money from their retirement accounts to pay for my education.

No reason not to try, but it doesn't sound like you'll get aid. People making 200K who have extenuating circumstances or just started making that much and therefore have no savings are the types who have a large income but still get aid. Yale disregards your first 200K of savings, but then expect you to tap it. Most people I know making 200K/year have made that for quite some time and have savings well in excess of 200K (including home equity) and therefore wouldn't qualify for financial aid.

If you took out 20K in loans over 4 years and had a job during the school year and summers, that would boost your ability to pay. Have an honest conversation with your parents. They may be grateful that you've come to the conclusion yourself that they shouldn't raid their retirement or they may tell you that they've got enough saved and that they really want you to go to the best college you get into.

I'm pretty sure that when you file the CSS profile there's a section where you can list "extenuating circumstances".

I think it's worth a shot. My family made slightly over that much this year (more than usual during the economic crisis--weird huh?) and we have an EFC of 35k. I really don't know what my extenuating circumstances would be b/c we have a cottage assets-wise.

ETA: I have no idea what the four x's and date mean.. didnt put them there.
