Financial Aid Question!

I’m getting about $40,000 in grant and $5500 loan, which is making BU look so damn attractive right now, but seeing as all this money isn’t from renewable scholarships…

I’m visiting BU over spring break the week after next week, and will talk to a financial aid officer about this, but I want to see if any of the BU students can help me out with this beforehand.

I know for a lot of these grants, I have to take a certain number of credits and maintain a certain gpa, and obviously I have no idea how well I’ll do in my first year. The money offered to me covers almost everything, but this is good only for the year 09-10, and I’m wondering if most people are able to maintain their eligibility for their 2nd-last year of college. I know this will give me more reason to work really hard, and I’m a pretty hard-working person to begin with, but there are no guarantees. And I got into University of Maryland College Park, aka in-state tuition.

Is it gonna be worth picking BU over UMD?

I can't comment on your last question since I don't know much about umd. But I will say that your financial aid package will really only change if your financial situation changes aka, your parents get a raise or you win the lottery, etc. Yes, sometimes it will change based on how you perform academically but if you work hard, you'll be fine. I don't think the gpa that you have to maintain is anything unreasonable. Don't underestimate your academic abilities, I'm sure you'll be able to perform fine.

I'm a rising junior and my financial aid package hasn't changed as a result of academic reasons. I work hard but I'm definitely not the hardest worker. I'm actually pretty lazy sometimes, haha.

If you're just getting a regular grant, then the requirements are only a 2.3 GPA and 12 credits hours (usually 3 classes). Both are very easy to maintain.
