Financial Aid Question

Hey,

So i'm gonna be a sophomore at NYU next year. I looked at my bill and it didn't include my scholarship, federal loans, or anything-which I had last year. I called the office last week and they said to wait another week for everything to be processed. I called again two days ago and they said to (again) wait a couple days for it to be processed. I called today (again) and they (again) told me to wait 5 business days for it to be processed. I logged onto my netpartner again for the billionth time this week and it read:

Direct Subsidized Stafford Prom Note-Not Received
Direct Unsub Stafford Prom Note-Not Received
Direct PLUS Promissory Note -Not Received
Stafford Entrance Interview-Not Received
Direct Loans PLUS parent form-Not Received
FAFSA-Received 5/4/2010

I have no clue what these documents mean...I'm pretty sure the first two I sent in the beginning of the first year and that should be good for 10 years. I'm tired of calling them because they just keep telling me to wait, and I think tomorrow I'm gonna take the train up to New York and find them personally. I'm freaking out right now because the payment is due August 11th and I can't pull 20,000+ dollars out of nowhere. I know they can't increase the amount of money they give you year-to-year, but I'm pretty sure they don't just take it away either right? I submitted my Fafsa thing way before the deadline as well. Anyone else having this problem/know what those not received documents mean/know what the heck i should do? I desperately need this-my dad lost his job a few years back and my mom is supporting the whole family (including three kids in college/grad school) with a part time job. all my classmates have already received their financial aid package.

If I am not mistaken, NYU changed the system for FA to the government. The documents that are missing are to be submitted via the new system to Net Partner. Because of this transition, I think that those promisory notes are noted uploaded or available. You might be able to speed up the process by login into the new system and submitting new promissory notes (I agree they are valid for 10 yrs., but this is a new FA system). You should continue to call them requesting a review of your FA case. Good luck!

fred.chu,
my daughter had the same thing without her scholarships, loan amounts, Work Study. FA said that it means that they have processed the FA but have not appeared yet on netpartner. It is in preparation for the things you have to do online to accept your loans.
NYU is now the direct lenders for any federal money. Their system is new. My daughter just received her FA award last week. I know it is frustrating because it is getting kind of late. You could call the FA and just tell them that your award is not posted on netpartner yet, but you just want to know is everything the same as last year. That is what we did, while waiting for the actual award and they were very nice and told us that the amounts were the same for last year, except of course the increase in stafford loans.

Thanks for the info! I sent in all those new forms and they say I should have my financial aid package by next week.

My question now is–how long were they going to wait to tell me I didn’t have those forms had I not called them? It was only after I called them earlier today and refused to hang up until they reviewed my financial aid did netpartner tell me I needed to send in those forms–and the payment is due in a little more than 2 weeks.

And this was getting me thinking on my tuition for this summer’s classes that I took. I didn’t receive any financial assistance for my summer class, and I asked around and people just told me that for summer classes it was harder to get financial aid. So I just figured I didn’t get any financial aid and borrowed some money from extended family members. However, if I called them to review my FA would they have then told me that I needed to submit more documents? One of my friends didn’t take summer classes because she didn’t get financial aid–but halfway through the summer netpartner told her that they needed more documents. By then it was obviously too late for her to register. Could I have gotten financial aid if I called them and made them review my financial aid like I did for this upcoming fall?

When did they switch to this new system?

Or maybe i’m just really irritated at how slow they’re processing things. People are looking for places to live for the next year within this week(typical move-in date is August 1 for outside apartments). How are we supposed to know our apartment budget if we’re not sure how much tuition costs?

The only thing I can answer is the US government are now direct lender for the federal loans, eliminating the commercial lenders like Chase, Citibank, Sallie Mae, etc. legislation was passed to have this go in effect, July 1, I believe, that is why it has taken so long.
