Hello, I am a canadian student planning to apply for financial aid..I am not very familiar with FAFSA or any of that and i will explain my circumstances.. Initially I did not plan to apply for financial aid because of how the chances for admission change when an international applys for AID..however a school i applied to and was recently admitted to and now have decided to attend (sent in deposit today) has encouraged me to now apply..i plan on doing so and was wondering..how likely is it as a canadian i will recieve any aid? another question is how long after i fill out the fafsa on the web forms will it take to process? also if their is anything i need to know please feel free to add..thank you very much

I believe this has been asked before. While I can see the school perhaps wanting you to apply (perhaps to take a look at your finances), I think there is zero chance of you getting United States Federal Financial Aid. The school may use it as a means of determining the institutional aid they may offer.

I've said it before, it would be the equivalent of me going north of the border to take advantage of Canadian government supported health care... eh???

But to answer your other question, you'll get a notification back (SAR) in a short period of time (mine was 2 days I think). Thats provided you do it on the web and have the required PIN numbers for electronic processing.

i don't have the required pin numbers..i have to obtain that..im sorry for being so uninformed about the topic..how long will receiving the pin numbers take?

AllenI, you should probably direct these questions to the financial aid office of the school you've decided to attend. They can tell you exactly what you need to do, and how likely you are to receive such aid.

Start here for tons of info:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before004.htm

Site says you will receive your PIN details via e-mail in approximately 1-3 business days; we received ours overnight back in January.

Good luck!

P.S. It's okay to ask questions: we're all in the same boat! :)

thank you all for the quick responses and the help i really appreciate this.

But I think you need a social security number to be able to apply for a pin for FAFSA. As a Canadian citizen do you have one? FAFSA and Federal aid is generally for US citizens or eligible non-citizens - I am not quite sure who qualifies as an eligible non-citizen - green card holders maybe.
