Financial Aid rant

But I fully expect the student to figure out what information is needed, ask the parent for the required information and work through the forms independently to the extent possible.

Wow! This is not my expectation of my 17 year old at all... but it is mind-opening to see the expectation differences. Given the number of parents who can't figure out the darn forms, it's no wonder there are so many frustrated students trying to do so.

for the record, a lot of adults don't do their taxes...they either get some software to do it for them or someone else to.

to expect a student to understand some of that jargon is ridiculous.

One suggestion, every year when I do the FAFSA I scan and keep a PDF copy of my tax return. When various schools needed the info at various times I had it right there available to edit and fax/email/upload/print & mail/etc. Very convenient

That's a good idea, somemom. This thread reminds me that I should go guilt my Daughters about HOW MUCH WORK I've done for them for the financial aid process this year. Right after I tell them how long I was in labor with each of them. ;)

To the OP---I agree, it's a pain in the rear, but obviously it will be worth it in the end. I'm "retired", so I appointed myself administrative secretary for my kids through the admissions process, etc. Besides, it gives me a good reason to be addicted to CC!!

We can all parse what each other says around here, but the applicant titled his post a "rant," and honestly, I didn't think it didn't come off as entitled or whine-y at all. I took it as a "whew, I'm done, can we vent and kvetch together over the insanity of the process?"

Exactly my point TXArtemis. Thanks for understanding and support from you and others.

OP,
I suggest you reconsider your usage of the word "rant," if you are simply seeking understanding and support from others. To me (and I believe, in common usage), a "rant" is a pompous, angry declaration about something, not a plea for understanding. Yes, the FA process takes some effort, but most worthwhile things in life do. Further, you included a threatening expectation that your (quite common, btw) efforts "better pay off. Wow, that sounds pretty entitled, if you ask me.
