Financial Aid really that bad?

I will be applying to Syracuse in the fall. I think my stats are good enough to get in( 2080 sat, 4.0 UNW GPA, etc) but I'm worried about financial aid.

I have an EFC of 0 and will be OOS so I don't qualify for NY state aid.

Does Syracuse really have such horrible finaid?

I'm really interested in Newhouse because it's such a great program, but I dont think i'll be able to afford the school.

Where did you hear that from? Because the last time I checked Syracuse is widely known to satiate most student’s financial needs. If you have excellent stats along with your 0 EFC then you should qualify for merit and need based aid.

I was interested in hearing personal experiences from current students. I’ve just gotten a negative impression about their finaid. I know that a school’s advertised finaid does not always match with what they actually give. Thanks though

I was extremely pleased with my package: originally $39,500 (talked up to $43,000)/$27,000 in institutional grants with an EFC of about $2800. I’ve heard nothing but good things from people with EFCs lower than $10,000. I say don’t worry.

If 27,000 of that consisted of institutional grants, was the rest loans?

nooooo. youll def get a presidential scholarship of 12000 plus prolly everything paid for in grants except 6000 in federal low interest loans and maybe a 1000 you are supposed to contribute while working over the summer

If you call and talk to the FA Office they’re more than willing to re-evaluate your award if you think they missed something. They bumped my grant from $3,300 to $11,500 after they realized they made a mistake.

I am going to attend newhouse in the fall despite the insufficient financial aid given. I was awarded a couple of grants/SUccess Grant and no merit (total of around $14 K/year). I spoke to a couple of other incoming Newhouse freshmen and I was informed that many (even with high EFC’s) were not awarded much financial aid as well. On the other hand, students in CAS, LC Smith, VPA, etc were awarded way more in terms of merit. I even spoke to a financial aid counselor on campus and she told me she could not offer me anymore financial aid. But what do you expect, it’s Newhouse! Dean Branham mentioned during a Spring Reception that approx 350 spots yielded out of a total of 5000 applicants. In the end, I figured I could not sacrifice my dream for money. So despite the ghastly weather (i’m from southern california) and insufficient aid…Newhouse here i come!
