My D received notification of acceptance along with the financial aid award from her top choice school. The award was less than we had hoped due to our high EFC. We are able to afford her first year's tuition (maybe 2nd too...) using our college savings, however assuming our EFC doesn't change, future years may be an issue. Does anyone know if schools are willing to consider offering additional aid/grants if requested or is the initial Financial Aid award usually final? I assume since we've already committed her to attend, we likely lost any negotiating leverage with the school at this point but I'm currious if there's any hope for future years?

Is this a school that meets need? Tries to meet need? As the saved funds are burned down the need gets greater which, in those cases, would be filled. If she does well she could also apply for any department scholarships/grants. If it’s a school that gaps you’ll want to forecast where you are with loans, etc.

The answer is maybe. We’ve depleted significant cash assets as we’ve sent S1 through college and S2 half way through. It still has not changed our EFC significantly enough to make a difference in our aid packages. There isn’t a cut and dried answer to the OP’s question and is dependent on our their asssets are structured, whether the kiddo is at a FAFSA school or a Profile and FAFSA school and whether the school in question meets need or not.

Welcome to CC.
When will your other 3 kids be starting college?
will their be any overlap in kids over the next 4 years?
Does your school meeet 100% demonstrated need with large amounts of institutional aid?

The answer is it depends. Since you must apply for financial ai each year, the package will most likely change depending on how many kids you have in college at the same time.

If D1 is a freshman and you have achild who is rising senior, when D1 becomes a sophomore, you may end up getting more need based aid becaue you will have 2 children in school.

If your kids are stairstep kids; one year apart, there may be a year where alll 4 of them are in school at once? That 4th year you may get savings. Check to see if the current school discounts for siblings (it may end up being on your list down the line).

Besides all the excellent info received, the LAC my S attends increases grants each year and alters our FA along his regular scholarship and possible loans. So our financial aid has been different every year.
