I got a email yesterday from UIUC and it says that the financial aid reward letter is available on line, so I checked it, I got some financial aid from the federal government, but its very small amount and for sure that there is no way I can afford 35K per yr, it didn't say anything about scholarships in the reward overview letter, does that mean I did not get any scholarship?
Thanks for helping^^.

Same kind of question. If you got no need based aid is it still possible to get merit aid? And am I right that merit scholarships come in the mail not by email?

I received a letter in the mail about receiving the University Achievement Scholars award and the amount was included in the financial aid letter. I’m guessing that if you received any other scholarships, it would be included there as well. Kind of sucks because I was hoping for one of the College of Engineering scholarships that everyone says is plentiful.

Contact the dept you are admitted to and ask when they release awards. My D received the university achievement award on 3/7 by mail. She is an RD admit. Then the e-mail financial aid notification came and the FA letter includes the achievement award. But her dept(music) doesn’t release any of their merit awards until 4/1, they told me. You need to find out when your dept. sends out their awards for EA/RD and then what happens to the portion of dept money declined when kids go elsewhere. Will it be redirected to other students, in which case you might still get an award in May or later? You can also call the university financial aid office to ask if all the general scholarship money has been awarded, and same question there- what happens to money that is declined?

I got really scared when people tell me that if there is no scholarships stated in the financial aid letter, then it means that we didnt get any scholarships. I was thinkging if i should just call them up and ask…

Really? btw, congrats on the admission and scholarships… they only give me some grand from the federal gov, and some tuition waive from UIUC…but not that much… feel really upset that they didnt give me any scholarships. just wondering ,do we need to fill other froms in order to be considered of getting scholarships? or the FAFSA is goood enough?

Thanks for replying, and does that mean they dont write the merit base scholarships in the financial aid letters? cuz i sorta know they wont give me any in state shcolarships since im not resident of illinois. Hopefully i will get the out state scholarships from UIUC

I too was pretty surprised to see that my son didn’t get any scholarship. He was an early admit, chemical engineering with a 35 ACT, (36 math and 36 science), 4.3 GPA. Really thought he would get something… This really makes the other private schools he was accepted to almost on a level playing field-tuition/wise. $34,000/year for a state school? What are they thinking??? Ugh

That is really impressive, i dont really know what type scholarships that they r included in the financial aid letter, cuz i checked their webside, and it states the merit aid scholarships will send out directly from the college that your son applied to. Therefore, i assume that the merit aid base scholarship is not part of the financial aid letter. I called them today and try to get the confirmation about it, but the office was closed because they r during vacation. i will call them again when they finish the vacation. and yea, even i accept all the student loan and the work study thing they offered, i still need to pay about 28K…that is crazy, and my mother cannot pay that much without any doubts. they didnt give out a lot financial support prob b/c im not resident of illinois, but still…that is way too expensive.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that U of I doesn’t give out much financial aid at all…many people don’t get anything. I’m in my 2nd year and the only “aid” I have received is loans. It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

Yea, i sorta know that they will not give me a lot federal aid, but i wasnt expecting not getting the achivement scholarship, or any other kind academic scholarships. im hoping that i can get at least some scholarships from the college merit aid base one. i have single parent, so there is no way that my mom can pay 27k a yr, so i was thinking if i can get some private loans from outside schools but they have extremly high interest.

A few days ago I got an email telling me my financial aid award letter was ready. I received like 7k a year in grants and 3k a year from a Federal Work Study. Now I got another email today once again telling me my letter was ready and I checked it again and they took away my grants except a 2k a year one, and took away my Federal Work Study. I know my dad recently replaced his FAFSA estimates with the real numbers, but still, are they allowed to offer me the aid like they did and then go and take it away? I’ll be calling the school tomorrow but I think its wrong of them to do this.

nriende3, that’s too bad about the grants. I hadn’t thought about that, that you might lose fin aid if actual FAFSA varies much from estimate, but I suppose they do consider it.

It seems the award letter changes as awards are added and other items are adjusted. So if you get more scholarships after the initial award letter is put up, then a week later or so, they go in and change the award letter to add in the new scholarship and adjust other items as necessary. More scholarship might mean reduced loans or something.

Haloyyyy, did you try contacting your dept or the financial aid office yet? Do it. It’s better than waiting and wondering. They won’t mind talking to you. That is what they are there for.

Yes, they absolutely are allowed to do this. In fact for federal aid, they are required to do it. Your final aid cannot be based on estimated FAFSA numbers, only final accurate numbers. Estimated aid is only as good as the estimated FAFSA information provided to them. Otherwise everyone would lowball their estimates to get higher aid than they are actually eligible for.

I havent call the office yet because my mother just finisehd the tax thing last week, i will change the number instead the estimate one, if there is nothing change, then i will call them.

has anyone heard anything about merit aid from U of I Engineering? We’re waiting & not sure whether to call. S went for NMF visit & they indicated he would get something but we haven’t heard anything yet.

My daughter received a small scholarship from the Materials Science and Engineering Department about 3 weeks ago. I would recommend that you call.
