Financial Aid & Scholarships For CC To UCB

I'm planning on going to De Anza for two years and transferring to UC Berkeley. It seems like I can get significant financial aid for UC Berkeley or other UC schools because of my family's income. So I might be able to have quite a bit of my UCB paid by grants but what about community college? Can I get financial aid for a community college like De Anza equal in proportion to what I would get while at Berkeley?

I think the same would apply to foothill too ;).

In proportion to? I don't know. CC is a different can of beans.

There is something called the "Board of Governor's Fee Waiver" available at California community colleges, dependent on income. Do a search for it on the Foothill or De Anza website. The basic idea is that it waives your enrollment fees, those $26/unit things you pay to take the class (tuition, in other words). It DOES NOT waive the other fees, a miscellaneous assortment of things (student body fees, things of that nature) that amounted to about $40 for me, or textbook costs.

You can apply for a subsidized loan through the college as well. Other than that, you're going to need third-party scholarships and the like to cover the rest.

i think it depends on your EFC so that would mean you would have to fill out a FAFSA.. For example, if your EFC is zero then you would get some aid for your CC education but if your EFC is say $5000 than that is more than the cost of CC for a year. On the the other hand if your EFC is $5000 and you qaulify for the BOGFW then you could get your tuition reimbersed.

They are really lenient about income and the EFC in my experience.

My EFC is in the neighborhood of $8k (a little over, I think), and I still qualify for BOGW, method C -- which means my fees are all covered and I just need to pay for books and miscellaneous fees. The year before, my EFC was lower (I think around 4-5k?) and I qualified with method B -- same results.

It also discounts your parking permit in some places. I will note the income/EFC thing is also based on how many people are in your family -- mine is a family of 4.
