Financial Aid/Scholarships

Boalt is UCB, not UCLA. Full tuition at Boalt would be somewhat different, it being a t-10 school. S is in the same boat as guitars’s S and is leaning toward taking his chances at HLS. He will make a decision after his cycle is over and all the financial offers are in.

My bad, T-14 on the brain

What do you think of UVA with 120k total vs. NYU with 0?

Our S would pick Harvard over UCLA’s full tuition($120K total) instantly.

UVA with $120K is a clear choice over NYU for us, as we are navigating T-14 Law school bazaar this year !!

S has very small chance at Harvard due to low 1st year GPA and fully understands the financial burden and is not falling in love with any school yet !!

thanks everyone for your advice.

My next question is… looking over the the info that Sybbie provided (thank you) we know we cannot come up with parent contribution of $35,000 as we have a dtr who will be a freshman in college also. so, would my son take out additional loans for the $35,000 that is parent contribution? this is so confusing… ugh!

btw, son is unsure as to where he’s like to live permanently. sybbie, yes the scholarship at UCLA is guaranteed for 3 yrs.

another question… if son has good credit (not much of it because he’s a student, but still good) would he qualify for loans to cover entire cost of attendance? this is what worries us the most, qualifying.

If Harvard gives you an EFC of 35k (your EFC may vary, but if you have an idea as to what it was at undergrad, I guess you can use that # as a jumping off point) and you cannot cover it, your son is eligible to take out a Gradplus loan for up to the full cost of attendance. So if your son had to borrow the full COA to attend Harvard, we are talking about ~ 217,800 with (61.k in unsub stafford loans).

UVA vs NYU is a harder choice. S would have a hard time deciding. Personal preferences will have to play a part, these schools are very different. He is in at NYU and we think UVA will WL him( have not heard anything from them since applying in September). S liked NYU a lot, but unless there will be some financial incentive, he’ll most likely pass.

parabella, D thought she was headed for a WL too since she applied in October and hadn’t heard a thing for so long. Don’t give up yet.

Do you think the schools are different in their academic approach or strictly the environment?

parentofpeople,

I was talking mostly about the environment and political leanings. Honestly, UVA is not exactly right for my S with his liberal views and love of all things urban. So he will not be heartbroken if it doesn’t happen. UChicago is first and foremost on his mind, if THEY don’t admit him, it will be a big disappointment.

Wait, UVA is a Conservative or Republican leaning school?

Certainly to the “right of center” politically.

I’ve only heard that about USC.

I was talking about t14 schools.
