Financial Aid Situation?whatcha Think

Okay so I got into both UCLA and USC. USC is my dream school, but I wouldn't mind going to UCLA. Here's the situation. If I were to Dorm at USC and UCLA I would pay

12,000 for dorm and tuition at UCLA,
15,000 for Dorm and Tuition at USC.

I love USC, but UCLA sounds tempting. USC is much closer to home so I could come home any day if I wanted too. UCLA is a little farther, and traffic is a ***** at westwood. USC is closer to home so I wouldn't have to pay for parking cuz I could park at my friends house nearby.

Here's the catch. I would do all that on loans, and If I went to UCLA without living on campus then I could go owing almost nothing. I would only pay like 1000 a year, but I'd be giving up the experience of dorming. What do you think? IS the college experience worth all this money.

what's your Major?

If USC's closer to your house, could you not do the same thing?

Personally, I'm kind of looking forward to the whole dorm experience but i wouldn't mind living at home (that coming from a person who hasn't been home in 2 years though...so i'm missing it;;)

You can still have a great college experience while living at home. And you save lots of $$.

You could compromise & live in the dorm the 1st year wherever you go & then live at home thereafter saving lots of $$. Lots of folks make most of their friends by dorming the 1st year & then keep the friends after they move out of the dorm to wherever they next decide to live. That way you'd also graduate with very little debt, regardless of which school you attend. Sounds like you have great aid offers to choose among. Congrats!

You See, USC is closer to my house but they are paying for me to dorm, it's part of the university grant. If I don't dorm then they just deduct that from my grant so I would still pay the same thing.

I would love to go to USC, but If I go to UCLA and drive then I'd save money. I really would like to dorm though.

Does anyone know how long people usually pay loans for? after they graduate.

Depends on how much they borrow & what their expenses & obligations are after graduating & what kind of job they get at what salary. Some folks live with their folks after graduating from college to save money so they can pay off their loans & save money to buy a place of their own. The more you borrow, the more you have to pay off & interest accummulates unless someone if paying the interest while you're in school, increasing the total loan amount.
