Financial Aid Status

on my hofstra portal today it shows an award of 27000 for 56000 total COA. that includes my scholarship of 22,000 and about a 5000 pell grant.

my parents had an income of around 29,000 this year.
it doesnt say anything about grants or work study or loans.

is this for real or is the financial aid process not done yet and theres more to come

Relatively new to the post. I am looking at Hofstra but can not do it without merit award. Not sure if I will get need based award but would you mind sharing your stats to get that kind of award.

you can see my stats in the admitted students thread

I checked my portal and it is states my FAFSA is complete and I do not have any additional awards. I do not qualify for a Pell grant but we both would qualify for Stafford loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) so my guess would be it is not complete. FYI Hofstra is not a school that fills the gap, meaning the awards will meet the cost of attendance, a lot of time they put the remainder (after student loans, grants, scholarship and work study etc.) to a parent plus loan to make up the difference. Based on their income I don’t think you should burden them with that type of loan. So when you get your final award letter make sure you read it carefully.

yeah i definitely don’t want to burden them with loans. my parents work hard enough as it is. i’ve applied to several schools and i’ve decided to go with whatever seems reasonable financially.

i know hofstra does not meet full need, but honestly i thought what we were expected to pay would be less than my parents’ income!

I think you will get more…grants, work study etc.

thats very assuring. thanks. i really hope so

today i saw my final financial aid. i got some work study but nothing much more. they gave me some federal loans – which is basically the same thing as paying. after the loans leaves almost 18,000 dollars?! together i’d be spending 24,000 a year (loans + cash)
seems like Hofstra doesnt want me to attend because i sure am not spending like half my parents income to go to go there.

i thought they would have grants to go around but it looks like my merit scholarship was the only thing hofstra gave me themselves. they have no financial aid help at all.

You can always ask for more aid. I know someone that’s a freshman at Hofstra now who was initially offered 20k in merit aid, and all he did was call them to get 8k more in merit aid per year.
That’s what I’m planning on doing at least. I was surprised by my low financial aid package too. I think that’s all that’s coming though, because why would they release snippets of the package rather than the whole thing at once?
I got 32.5k. 22k of that is my merit scholarship, 5.5k is loans, 3k in federal work study, and 2k in a grant. It doesn’t really cover my demonstrated need, but it’s doable should I choose to attend. Sigh.

@annie457 I sent financial aid an email today about how my parents literally cannot spend more than half of what they make on my education every year.

yeah i dont know why they would give financial aid like that. if they have more funds to go around, why wouldnt they just apply that? because this is a major turnoff for me and my family for this school. it makes the fin. aid department look sketchy
i am no longer attending admitted students day nor the honors college dinner.

That’s a shame, I’m sure hofstra will miss out on a great student. But really, if its not affordable dont go there.
I just think its so weird… my parents have an income more in the middle class bracket and you still did not get as much financial aid as me.

Do write a letter explaining your circumstance and see what they offer back. Especially if you are a strong student they WILL pay attention. My S has 23K merit, 2000 grant , 3000 work study and 5500 loans leaving us with over 23000 as parents. We have another in college with a 20000 price tag and can not afford over 40000 for colleges. We too will ask for more especially since my sons SAT went up dramatically in Jan from 1980-2200. My son can go to a strong state school for 15000 total and will not accept a higher price tag at Hofstra. Have to appeal, no other choice. Good Luck to all!

hopefully things will turn out. i also am accepted to a in state school and it is much cheaper than this. but really Hofstra has gone to the bottom of my list

they replied back talking about private loans, parent PLUS loans, and applying for outside scholarships. they said i could contact them for more aid, but that most likely it would not change much…

It is a misconception that federal aid will make up the difference in the price of a school. Prepare for the package—and the shortfall. If you do qualify for aid from your college, don’t expect all of it to be in the form of grants, or gift aid. Almost all need aid is given in a “package” consisting of grant, a subsidized student loan (subsidized means you don’t have pay interest while you are in college), and work study. Furthermore, because of tight financial aid budgets at most colleges, expect that the total amount of aid given will fall short of the amount for which you are eligible. This shortfall is called the “gap,” meaning an extra amount you will have to provide in addition to the calculated EFC.Schools do not have a lot of funds either to make up the difference. There are very few schools that will meet the gap but there are some…64 according to this line, however, keep in mind loans will still be a part of the formula.
