Financial Aid, Student Housing, and Being Poor - Life's Problems

First thing is first - I'd love to go to the Stern School of Business as an incoming freshman in 2008. However, I've heard a lot of scary stories regarding NYU's financial aid, especially their student housing, or lack thereof.

So, for someone making less than $40K a year household, is NYU an unreachable dream? Is the financial aid really that bad at NYU? What can I do to pay for it without going $200K in the hole?

Is getting an outside apartment required? I've heard there is little student housing; who gets the rooms first? Are there requirements based on one's graduating class, etc?

Thanks in advance.

why don't you apply and get in first...you can afford the $60 application (you can even get a waiver), worry about it after you get in and get your package. My families income was 50k, and I got 20k a year from NYU. Freshmen are guaranteed housing. If you have good stats you may get a good scholarship.

Knowing that I would have to contribute immensely would keep me from applying in the first place...

Thanks, though.

I'd say apply anyway...my income was 60,000+ and got a 30,000 dollar scholarship..

you truly never know

Apartments in Manhattan are so expensive you probably can't afford one anyway. Think like $2k for a decent 1bedroom.

At this point in his career I don't see how the apartment prices are relevant lol.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about housing. You're not required to find a placce on your own, and there's enough student housing for undergraduates (although it might be in Florence or London...)

If you want student housing -- and you do want student housing from both an affordability and housing quality perspective -- you are guaranteed a place as long as you maintain your participation in it.

<<knowing that="" i="" would="" have="" to="" contribute="" immensely="" keep="" me="" from="" applying="" in="" the="" first="" place...="">></knowing>

Move along then, NYU isn't free for anyway.

FWIW, my son got 30K in scholarhip money. 5900 in stafford and perkins (no pell grant). $1000 Work study. and mom (that would be me) is paying the rest out of pocket for at least this year, no loans in my name. He's applied to all the freshman LCT (Hayden LCT and Rubin as first choices. I'd be relieved if he got the LCT triple in Rubin, it's the cheapest

You can't honestly tell me that 1) some anonymous people are going to convince you to apply or not 2) you're future isn't worth a $65 risk?
