Financial Aid tax return translation

I am an Italian student and I have to send to Princeton University the full certified translation of the tax return of my family. In Italy it is necessary that a document must be certificated in a court to be legalized. Do I need to do this or I just need a certificate from the translator who did the translation?

I googled certified translation, and I found that the translator certifies it. I also asked (and I know it seems a bit stupid, but getting things translated is expensive) and was told that I could translate myself and get the town hall to certify it. I haven’t checked yet with the town hall yet, though, to see if they are willing. I was hoping my fluent daughter could ask, but she had activities all day and school all week, so I will be forced to ask in bad French. This financial stuff is a real hassle, if it isn’t in English.
