If anyone can give me some advice I would really appreciate it. My girlfriend has applied for financial aid and recieved the award notice, the problem she has is that her mother will not turn in the outstanding requirements. She has not turned in her 2010 tax return or the parent worksheet. We are planning on getting married and I was wondering if maybe we could go back in and change her status to married. I was wondering if anyone knows if that will then void her mother's information and change it to mine. Like I said, she has only been given an estimated award. They have not actually processed it yet. Thanks alot.

No. The rule is VERY much set in stone … students who are not married at the time they filed the FAFSA cannot update their status to married during that award year. She would not be able to file as married until next year if you marry now.

If her mother will not submit the info that is required, your girlfriend will not get her aid.

Thank you very much for your input.

Btw, it’s the 2009 tax return schools would be looking for…2010 returns are not due until next April.

^^^

I think he means that she hasn’t yet filed in 2010 for the 2009 income.

*the problem she has is that her mother will not turn in the outstanding requirements. *

Are you saying that she’s refusing to file her taxes because she doesn’t want to cooperate with FA?

Is your GF an incoming freshman?

What kind of aid would your GF be getting if her mom did file?

I was wondering about that, too. Has her mom not filed yet, or is she refusing to give your girlfriend the tax returns that are already filed? If that’s the case, is there more to the story? What is her relationship with her mother like?
