Financial Aid Update

I just got an e-mail saying:

"A recent adjustment has been made to your financial aid package. This adjustment has been made because your parent's tax information was reviewed."

Unfortunately, it was in the wrong direction.

The thing is, I have already accepted and sent in a deposit, partially based on different financial information. This just doesn't seem right to do (even if it's policy!).

Did this happen to anyone else? Is there anything I can do?

Sorry, I'm just sort of freaking out.

Wow that does not sound fair at all. Try calling the financial aid office and ask them to direct your call directly to your counselor. I’m sure they will refund your deposit if the cost slip is really large and the new amount can’t be paid. Talk it over immediately with your counselor though because the deposit for other colleges is due May 1st.

yeahh. happened to me too, before i sent in the deposit though. by about 1k/yr. =(

Just to update…So, apparently the first awards they tell you are estimates (based on your own), but then once the true tax returns come in, the true awards are given…It’s nothing amazingly drastic, but I was sort of confused when it happened. It’s a little strange (and unfortunate) to me, but nonetheless, I am still attending and excited to attend, but maybe something can be done about this.

Thanks for providing the update. I hope you’ll have a great experience at UR.

For anyone else reading this, almost all the time your award needs to be “verified.” This is a federal requirement - meaning you’re getting some sort of federal aid, like a Pell Grant or something subsidized. If your parents get their tax returns in early, then the verification is done well before May 1. If not, then you have this risk.
