FINANCIAL AID UT 2019(Stingy or not?)

So everything seems to get in place right now. The very few last steps include financial aid package. I am super anxious about the financial aid package that I will receive. I’ve heard that UT is very “stingy” about giving out financial aid, but then a lot of others told me they are pretty considerate.

Anyone have any idea on how much is the average financial package at UT? I have EFC of 150, and Fed Pell grant estimate me to have $5580, and I also have PAS scholarship of $5000, but that’s nowhere close to the COA at UT.

Add in your thoughts on how financial aid package at UT are going to go!

Our EFC was $8800 and My son received a UT Grant for $9750 and $600 for State Top Ten Percent Scholarship last year. We paid the difference. Hope this is helpful.

I just saw this now (sorry I’m late OP). Hopefully this helps future prospective longhorns, though!

They may not be giving out the Top Ten Percent Scholarship this year because of lack of funding. Overall, it seems like UT is pretty stingy with financial aid this year (at least that’s my impression after talking with quite a few people).

@imthereal, wow. UT created the Texas Advance Initiative so that it could offer better financial aid this year!

@Fredjan Yeah, it’s pretty terrible! If your EFC is really, really low and you’re an excellent student, you may get Texas Advance. Otherwise, it’s really hard to get scholarships at UT, especially based on merit.

I just remembered that I was told that most of the scholarships UT offers require a UT GPA in order to qualify, so they aren’t available to incoming freshman. I think many of the scholarships are also departmental. If you would like a little extra help but can pay the initial cost of attendance, there’s always that option!

@imthereal
Even with Pell and the Texas Advance scholarship (which is what this student got), UT is out of reach. $10,500 barely covers tuition… the student would require an additional $5-6k in grants, the full federal loan amount, and co-op housing. This way tuition+room&board would be fully covered.

EDIT: It seems that our OP is going to UT!
