I received a request for Financial Aid verification. Is the request initiated by FAFSA or by the school? Are the varifications random or are they because of something that was flagged. We didn't report anything that was not correct, so that is not an issue but was just wondering if it is common or not? Thanks

It is very common. Schools are required to verify a minimum of 30% of all FAFSAs submitted to them. They may choose FAFSAs that have been flagged by FAFSA (an * next to your EFC on the SAR - this can be random), they may select randomly, or they may select you for some reason. They can verify up until they have hit the 30% mark. or they can verify more than 30% (I think my son’s school verified every FAFSA).

We have probably been verified 7 out of 11 FAFSAs so far.

There was a random verification pulled for us the summer before my daughter started college - fortunately it was for a school she was just about to reject, so we didn’t have to go through the hassle.

My older daughters school requested verification every year- but ya want their money, ya got to jump through their hoops.

OP I’m assuming you know this but the request for verification will come from the college. We’ve had the asterick by our FAFSA EFC but the college did not ask for verification and we’ve had years with no asterick and we did get verified. As someone said the colleges can pick randomly.
