Hey everyone!
I just got a financial aid verification form in the mail.... I'm not sure if anyone knows anything about this, but I was wondering if that meant that I'm probably in. Do they hand out random verification forms, or do they only give them to those who to whom they will being giving financial aid (aka those who are accepted)? I'd appreciate response from anyone who might have an idea, because I'm really excited right now, but I don't want to get my hopes up if it means nothing.
Thanks!

What is a "financial aid verification form"? I know that Kenyon College sends a reminder to applicants who noted that they will be applying for financial aid. Is that what you are referring to? Was it an e-mail or U.S. mail delivery? Also, what part of Penna.?( just the region, like northeast or central, etc.)

No, this was a form that basically said they wanted to see my parents tax returns....

My parents own their own business so our income is ridiculously low....think waaaaaay below the poverty line. We don't do too badly for a lifestyle, but money is always coming and going through the business so I'll need tons of financial aid. I probably qualify for just about everything and anything out there, which is why they want to make sure I'm not bamming them.

But I was hoping that if they weren't going to admit me, they wouldn't go through the trouble of verifying my information. It seems like it would be too much effort. Do you think that's a reasonable assumption?

It was a mail delivery, and I'm from Erie County, the little chimney on Pennsylvania, if that gives you an idea. It's sandwiched right between Ohio and New York.

It is a reasonable assumption, but this is only a guess on my part. I really don't know. Also it could be that the financial aid person is just a very thorough person. Hopefully Kenyon is your first choice because that is very personal info. Kenyon is a great school with the most beautiful campus that I have ever seen; the new gym is also the most impressive that I have ever seen, even compared to much larger schools. Kenyon College is one of the most generous schools re:financial aid in the country. I know Pennsylvania well, but have only driven by on the interstate near Erie. My wife and I stayed at a very nice Holiday Inn that seemed pretty new. The desk clerk was a beautiful young lady, a year younger than you,who is interested in Georgetown. St. Lawrence University in upstate New York also is a beautiful liberal arts school that is quite generous with financial aid. SLU's deadline is feb.15 for applications.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's where I want to go, but in the end, I'll probably go to the best school that offers me the most money. I'm really excited though!
I've never visited, sadly, and would get out there in a heartbeat if I had the time.
Thanks for the help, Garrity!

Also, if anyone else has received something similar, feel free to weigh in!

i also got the same letter. and also am asknig for tons of financial aid. and kenyon is one of my top choices. i called the financial aid office about it and they said if i were to get in they want to be as accurate as possible with the financial aid. it does not affect my admission decision they said. I mainly called them because my parents just dont have the time to do their taxes right now so i wanted to know if i could send it in around march 1st and they said it was fine.
hope that helps.

Thanks!
I never thought of calling them up....lol, I'd hate to seem like I was fishing for an early decision, but I don't think we'll be able to get ours in early either.

I received this same letter a couple of weeks before I was accepted EDII. I'm not sure if that means anything though. In fact I still haven't sent the letter back yet. I got $27,456 in need-based aid but its still tentative.

Ooh, I'm all jittery now....
Does anyone know if Kenyon sends their RD letters religiously on April 1st, or do they send them out as they go?

I hope earlier, I wanna know!! I got the verification letter too, so yeah hopefully that means they'll admit me.

Last year they sent the decision letters on March 24th.

Thanks! (10 chars)

From the Finaid.org website:

"If your financial aid application is selected for verification, the school will require you to submit additional documentation, such as signed copies of your tax returns, W-2 and 1099 forms. The federal government selects 30% of the FAFSAs for verification. Some schools, to be fair, require all students to complete verification."

In my limited experience, Kenyon is unusual in that it does not ask for tax returns, W-2, etc. from the start. I think the elite LACs have a list of documents that it will ask for. One of my D's schools asked for all of the above, plus copies of yearend paycheck stubs! Since she applied to half a dozen LACs, I spent last weekend finishing the taxes and making copies of all of the above.

But let's hope that you are right that their request for verification is an indication of their sincere interest in you (as well as your parent's free cash flow)!!! Since my D's app was flagged, I'm hoping so, too!
