Financial Aid Verification??

So I was selected to verify my FAFSA so I wanted to know is are they verifying it by comparing it to FAFSA or by checking my records?? Because it asks me to report any money that I won in the year even if I did not file taxes. I didn't put it on my FAFSA because i said I wasn't going to file taxes because i wasn't required and i didnt know how much it was but now I don't know if i should put it on the verification. i only won a little bit so i wasn't required to report it. my questionis, if i put that i won some and then they see that on FAFSA i didn't report it will i get in trouble? Will they even know. Or if i put that i didnt win any then if it will match FAFSA will that be enough verification or do they go check my social security. will i get in trouble for reporting the money on the verification but not on FAFSA?? I need help please. And thanks in advanced.

Verification is not a big deal…schools are required to verify a fairly high percentage of FAFSA’s every year and to correct any errors/oversights they find. Don’t worry about “getting in trouble”…it’s not their job to penalize people who make a mistake, unintentionally or otherwise and they will simply make any needed corrections to your FAFSA. Just answer the questions honestly and to the best of your ability and you’ll be fine. A small amount of winnings and no other income is unlikely to make any difference in your EFC anyway.
