financial aid when parent is disabled

my dad has been disabled for a year now, and next February (2017) his long term disability will be used up. i will be graduating in 2017, and i was wondering how this significant income decrease will affect financial aid, especially since i know the fafsa will not be calculated accounting the income decrease. Will I be able to explain circumstances to colleges, or will the income my parents made in 2015 be the sole decision maker for financial aid?

you will complete the FAFSA using the information requested (2015). After you are accepted to schools, you can file an appeal (forms are often on the web) and each school will have to consider your circumstances. It does make it hard to compare the schools, but if you know which school you want to go to, start working with the FA office early. If you send a letter or email, you’ll probably get one person to deal with an it makes it easier.

@twoinanddone thanks!

There is a space on the Profile to put additional information you want the school to consider.

@Hailee8 Since many schools simply do not have the funds to “give more” even when the student should get more, be sure to also apply to a few schools that you know FOR SURE will give you huge merit for your stats…as back ups.
