financial aid with housing off campus

hey all, I have decided not to live on campus because of a variety of reasons

Im not your regular Bruin..im 28 yrs. old and just returned to school from the work force, and therefore value my independence living alone

I snore...LOUD

anyways in my provisional financial aid packet, they gave me like $12,000 for housing. My question to you all is, if i dont apply for housing, will that 12,000 disappear from my financial aid package all together? or can i still use that to pay for housing off campus? im really confused, and at any rate I would hate to get another fulltime job just to pay for housing, while going to UCLA full time. It was really difficult to pull off the double whammy in City College, and it may be too difficult to do so at the university level. thanks.

hi ditto (minus the snoring factor… haha )
I’m opting for the University Apts at this moment… could change tomorrow though!

I asked this question yesterday… It’s my understanding that if you choose to live off campus (university apartments are considered off campus) :

your budget IS lowered $2000.

I was also told that this 2000 reduces the amount of loans you have to take out… But I also have a friend that said that the 2000 reduces the grant money she is getting (so she opted to live on campus)… At any rate the difference should only be $2000.

Good luck!

If your on a need-based financial aid package then they will adjust your loans/grants accordingly.

In other words, if you NEED less you will GET less. Especially in grant money; that has to be allocated very conservatively.
