Financial Aid

Hi, I am an international student who's probably attending McGill this fall.

McGill has generously granted me a $3000 entrance scholarship and another $7000 entrance bursary.

However, my budget is still a bit short, considering I will have to attend McGill for 3 years(I will start from U1 due to my AP credits)

So I am wondering about the detail about some programs that I could receive financial aid.

a) In-Course financial aid
As I mentioned, I will be attending McGill this fall and I just wonder whether I could start applying this aid immediately or I will have to wait until next year. Also I am wondering whether it will be extremely hard to get this aid and how much money I could get out of the program.

b) Work-study
I know little about French, just the basics, will this hinder my chance to get a work-study? What kind of job normally will I get and how much time I will have to spend on it, and most importantly, what is the rate of it?

I really appreciate any relevant input.

In-course aid I’m pretty sure is something you do at the beginning of the year, although if you’re in a pinch there are emergency loans available.

As for work-study (which I’ve researched much more thoroughly), as an international student with financial need, you have priority for getting a job. French is preferred or required in some, maybe even many, positions, but certainly not all. A lot of them require only passive understanding (e.g. if you need to read some document or other which is written in French). You apply ASAP for work-study eligibility, and if you get it (most people do), then you can start applying for individual jobs. You can do a lot of different things–research assistance, office work, service, etc.–and they schedule your work hours around your classes. Salaries are listed individually but they tend to be around CAD$11-12/hour.

There should be a page where detail of work study is clearly stated but themanstan24 has summarized that well enough.

Same problem as OP as the description is a bit vague on that page:

so international freshmen can apply for financial aids in Fall 2011? I thought we would have to wait till another year. btw, is that hard to get?
