So I would love to go to Michigan but they barely gave me anything. Our EFC is around $10,000 and all we received was a $3000 grant and $7000 in loans, totaling to around $10000 in "aid" making the final cost to attend over $40,000...does anyone have any experience in getting more money from UMich through special circumstance/aid appeal? My dad was laid off twice in the past 3 years we can't afford that.

Any insight would be appreciated.

For oos student, it does not matter what is your EFC as need will not be met. Unless you have a deep pocket or received large scholarships, UMich is usually not affordable to oos students who depend on financial aids.

Disappointing to hear I understand it won’t be met 100% but do you think I could get within the range of under $30,000 to attend?

I am deciding between michigan state and michigan and to attend msu it would $28k/yr but if we can get michigan somewhere close to that I would go there instead…

Contact the Financial Aid Office at Umich.

Yeah we’re going to, would it be a good or bad idea to mention that I might have to go to michigan state if we can’t afford it? I mean michigan is my top choice

Even with the LSA or Engineering Honor scholarships of $20k/yr for the very top oos students, it will still be more than $30k annual cost. So you are basically asking if you can get a Shipman level scholarship which is not going to happen.

Did not expect it to be this bad

Did you try the NPC before applying?

If Michigan State has given you a finaid package that brings the cost to affordability for your family then that is a very good deal for a Big 10 school as it it close to $50,000 for out of state freshman at Michigan State. It is pretty common knowledge that University of Michigan does not meet need for out of state and internationals.
