Financial Aid

Hey CC! Before the deadline to submit SIR approaches, I was wondering if it would be prudent as an out-of-state admitted student to email the financial aid office about lowering costs or receiving more aid. I was born in Cali and parents attended a UC school, received some financial aid, but still ridiculously expensive with loans and would like to search for other options for aid/scholarships. Any advice would be appreciated!

We did it, but they already gave out their money. So, doesn’t look good.

Keep in mind that the $23,000/year out-of-state fee is considered non-negotiable. They might help with other costs, though.

@ucanthrograd I’m not quite sure what you mean; I still only have a financial estimate and not an official document yet from ucsd. and @Lilliana330, the $23,000 fee is the added tuition fee for out-of-state right? So there exists a possibility for help with costs like housing/books/ and other fees?

@Doisko Yes, that fee. No, room & board are never covered with grants unless you A) have a very low income (Pell grant eligible) or B) receive a Regents/Chancellor scholarship. What’s your EFC?

^ Sorry, it wouldn’t let me edit. Technically, you could appeal if you have any special circumstances/any change in income since you filed Fafsa. However, without those, it’s very unlikely.

@Lilliana330 Thanks for that info, my EFC is at 0 but I’m not sure how much that will help me. On my estimated aid page, it does refer to Pell Grant.

@Doisko Is there a UC grant in there too?

@Lilliana330 Yup, but there is also $0 outside aid under the grant portion

@Doisko Well, outside aid would be any outside scholarships you earn & report. How much is the grant?

@Lilliana330 The estimated grant amount is 22,000 which I realize is a lot, but in comparison to total costs not enough.

@Doisko Hmm it seems like they gave you the maximum amount of grants. Here:

-Every UC student (instate or out of state) has an expected contribution of about $9000 (a mix of work study and loans) -there’s nothing you can do about it, unless you receive outside scholarships. Then there’s the $23,000 out-of-state fee. Those add up to $32,000.

-Net price = UCSD non-resident cost of attendance - grants = $54,000 - $22,000 = $32,000

Sooo you have received the best package you could possibly have at a UC, as expensive as it may be. The reason why they’re offering you extra loans is to cover the OOS fee.
