Financial Aid

I'm thinking about NYU next year, and I'd put it much higher on my list of schools if it wasn't for the price. I'm in a pretty bad place, my family makes around 150k a year, but still, 42k a year is a lot for my family to pay. Do I have any shot at financial aid or grants? Or should I forget about NYU and stay at a state school?

Yes NYU is an expensive school. However, if you are extremely smart, I believe that you might not have to pay for all. In fact, look at Mattistotle's financial aid, it's not that bad at all. Nonetheless, he has good stats and etc. so he deserves it. Your parents make 150K a year, and this is not that much considering that it's the sum of your two parents' incomes. My parents make much more money than your parents do but I still applied for some financial aid. I am not hoping to receive much however it's worth trying. 42K is a lot for anyone except for Bill Gates and those billionairs. If you truly love NYU, go for it. I believe that your stats are good and that your recs and etc. are good also. Seriously, don't think about financial aid and just apply to it. If you are serious about money, then I recommend you to apply for Regular Decision. But did you know that NYU is more generous with Early Decision acceptees?

My mother alone gets $30K a month, so if I get accepted and get some financial aid, I will post it here. If I get some financial aid, anyone could get it. I am pretty sure about that. I hope I get a good news today..I am tired of waiting for the decision letter...pray for me everyone! :)

and good luck to you. post your stats

Why do you keep carrying on about how well-off your family is? Is being wealthy some kind of 21st century virtue?

Your family makes over a million dollars a year and you applied for finaid...that's not right.

give me money

I'm a Junior, but here are my stats
4.0/4.0 uw GPA as of now, but I bet it ends up around 3.9. All my classes are considered honors because the school I go to is a public county run school that you must apply to get into.
SAT 710 Math (Taken once, I think I can get up to a 750), 570 Verbal (I only took it once and bombed it, and I am expecting my final verbal to be 650-700.) So I'd guess I'd end up with 1380-1450 next year.

I think I could probobly get into Stern, but I doubt thats enough to get any type of scholarship.

KJayson I know you are probably not trying to rub it in our faces, but I wish you would stop talking about how you are so wealthy. My father makes in a year what your mother makes in 3 months and he works 12 hours a day at a very high stress level job. Yes, we probably would be wealthy if his clothing store hadn't gone out of business 6 years ago, but there's nothing I can do about that. My mother, on the other hand, has not been able to find a job for the last 6 years, and with only my father's salary and my brother also at a private college everything is a struggle. That is why I find your applying for financial aid to just be...insulting. You don't need it. Other people do. So why even try to take it away from them?

I know this is a rant about unfortunate things that have happened to me and it's nothing really personal against you, KJayson, but please be considerate of those on here who are going through the middle class grind everyday and have never felt financially secure in their lives.

I edited this post.

I understood. But don't be angry at me. Doesn't this only motivate you?
You can always study hard at Stern or the School of Social Work and become a good employee of some big coporation and who knows? you might become a CEO.

I applied to financial aid because i had the option and i chose to have it. So?
and 40K is also a lot for us. we are not billionairs...

well yes, i am humble because i have but I am proud because i do.

The good news is that NYU is need blind. The bad news is that it does not guarantee 100% of need, nor does it provide it for most students and a goodly amount of the packages are loans and work opportunities. The merit awards tend to go to top scorers on the SAT1.

You can always try your luck but make sure that you include some more generous schools in your choices including schools where you are clearly in the top 10% of the applicant pool so that your chances of getting merit aid and a first class package are greater.

and also, there are some ways to get some good amount of financial aid even if you are wealthy. my mom did it all but like...financial aid counselor or w/e did the work so...i hope i get some money from nyu. :) seriously, why spend 40k when i can receive some.

Why spend 40k? Because according to you, with your family earning 1 million dollars per year, 40k is a drop in the bucket every year. Me on the other hand? It's nearly half my dad's yearly salary and there's no way we can afford to pay it. With NYU not being able to cover 100% of financial need for many applicants, thus making them unable to attend, why would you take the money away from those who need it when you are already rich? That's horrible. No you are not "billionaires" (yes, there's an e in there) but you are millionaires, something 99% of us are not.

I am not angry at you for being wealthy, I'm angry at you for your attitude. If you receive financial aid you are taking it away from those who truly need it and making them unable to attend the school of their dreams. That seems a bit unfair to me....

You want to be a social worker? You want to "help people?" Well then don't take away their chance at the college dream.

I am sorry but I have not received my decision letter yet...so isn't this too early? criticize me after I get an acceptance with financial aid.

It was my choice and what are you complaining about? my attitude? I am sorry but what are you talking about? you are the one who freaked out of no reason. I shall help you and that's why I want to goto the School of Social Work.

lol it's too early!! i still did not get my decision letter yet...so...please...i am suffering :( :(

If you don't understand why I don't like your attitude you have a major problem...

my god...people have some sense of humor
mine is obviously bizzare but eh i am not that serious.

i will tell you if i get any financial aid...though i doubt it.
if i get like a thousand...then it's a lot. ha-ha

If you're not expecting anything more than $1000, then what's the point?

oh now you think 1K is nothing? 1000 a year is still a lot. seriously, with that money i can goto Cancun more than twice or even three times. airfare+hotel

But couldn't you do that anyways?

Don't we all love money?

The only difference is some of us have more to love than others.

"Don't we all love money?"

You're digging a hole here on yourself there, basing on the type of person you're portraying yourself to be. The issue was that You are an egocentric richboy who does not Need financial aid. Terefore as Will says, a 1000 dollar a year is but a drop in the bucket as oppose to say, someone who's parents make only 100k a year.
Share the wealth, dude.
