Financial Aid?

Did anyone else who received RD admission have any financial aid information in their portal? Also are all RD applicants not considered for scholarships since their website says you must have been admitted by February 1st?

My portal has no financial aid info. Every tab I click has no information and just mentions the 2017 aid year.

I am worried and just want to know if this is normal or if I should call. I submitted my FAFSA and CSS profile a while ago.

I got in EA and I still don’t have any FA info. Supposedly we we’re going to receive the information yesterday, but I don’t think they released anything. I called the Office of Financial Aid and they said that that we could expect see our aid on WA sometime this upcoming week!

Would that only be people who got in on December 21st or even those who got in after?

It depends when you got in I think. If you got in in January, then you might get it this week. But of you got in Februray/March, then it might take longer (but no longer than May 1). It seems to me that Michigan really isn’t that helpful when it comes to things like this unless you call them.

A couple years ago, my D received the estimated FA package on 3/6 (Thursday). So it is not necessary on Friday, but it should be about time for it.
For merit scholarships automatic consideration, one needs to be admitted in December 2015, not Feb 1, 2016.

@billcsho So only EA applicants then are considered for scholarships? That’s annoying.

@NICE8x It is same the case for many schools too. They explicitly said that on their website. Students with high achievement are ready for college application before EA deadline anyway. Those applied later are either less interested in the school, or are not ready for the application before deadline. For UMich, there is no reason not to apply EA as there is hardly any rejection but deferral if not admitted.

@billcsho I visited UMich and I live very far away and they never mentioned it, so I do not think it is as clear as you are making it out to be. I mean I understand why they would give EA applicants the scholarships, but I remember during the info session that they said it did not matter when you apply and that there were no additional forms to apply for scholarships-that everyone is automatically considered.

@NICE8x I don’t know if it’s the same for engineering, but the LSA webpage says, “LSA students admitted by December 24 via Early Action receive primary consideration for LSA Scholarships.”

Will we get an email when our financial aid is posted?

I’m in the same boat; accepted in December but still waiting. Someone on the applicant thread suggested the office said they would begin to come out yesterday (3/4/16) but (for whatever reason) plans have changed. The official admissions Twitter account mentioned a few weeks back that they would begin to release in “early February” so it’s a good bet that they’ll be starting this week just like @fabes1998 said.

@SpacemanPiff Not sure, but I’d be almost certain that snail mail will follow up soon simply because it’s such an important matter and they’d probably want to make sure parents see it as well.

@AcceptableName Okay, so it seems RD students are not completely out of consideration but EA students get first dibs so to speak. Would we have found out when we got our acceptance if we received any merit aid or would that also be part of the regular FA package that everyone is waiting for?

SMTD students earn merit and they are not EA.

@NICE8x You don’t find out when you are accepted, nor do you find out in your FA package. I believe it’s kind of on a rolling basis. You will get accepted and sometime later you will get a letter in the mail if you have been chosen for a merit scholarship. In my case, I was accepted in December and received a letter early January saying that I was rewarded a scholarship.

@AcceptableName Ok, thank you so much!! I got my acceptance (I did RD because I was completely clueless when it comes to how the scholarships are awarded at Michigan) and was wondering about the merit aid/FA aid.

Speaking from experience, don’t count on merit aid going too far. It isn’t intended to replace need-based aid. As for financial aid, my experience is that UM will meet your “demonstrated need” and is pretty generous. They will, however, expect you to take subsidized loans. The greater your need–according to UM–the larger the share of your FA package that comes from grants.

@Brexit99 In-state or Out-of state? And what FAFSA EFC, if you don’t mind sharing? At least judging by the NPC, I fall into the classically bemoaned “middle-class financial aid pit” just out of reach of more substantial offerings. Though they do cover a substantial portion, I’d still be on the hook for 20k/year in loans, subsidized or otherwise. Still a lot to swallow…

I think the portals have been updated. On your portals under financial aid, click “Financial Planning Calculators.” Click “Calculate estimated bill” and go down to where it says “Grants and Scholarships.” I think that will be the amount you will get in grants. Mine used to show only the amount I received from my merit scholarship, but now it shows a greater amount. Does this work for anyone else?

@AcceptableName When I do this there are two buttons: Calculate estimated bill and Calculate private/plus loan eligibility. The cost of tution under each button is VASTLY different, so I’m confused on what is accurate. Are the amounts different for you too?

@NICE8x I don’t really know. The second tab shows the amount of aid being offered. Is that the same for both of the tabs? Take the amount from “calculate estimated bill” on Grants and scholarships and double it (to make it per year). Then, compare that number to the amount of aid being offered as shown in “calculate private/plus loans.”
