Financial Aid

We visited Champlain on April 26 – the day of the snow storm – and my daughter loved everything about Champlain. Prior to visiting, she had some concerns about the school’s size; they were put to rest during the tour. What was once her first choice (UVM) has now slipped considerably and Champlain tops the list.

My daughter plans on applying, but several times she has mentioned the cost, which is significantly more than the SUNY schools she has visited. I love the fact that my daughter is thinking ahead concerning student loan debt, but at the same time, don’t want her to limit herself.

She’s a good student with a 3.7 GPA, 29 ACT, has not yet taken SAT, and was contacted by the College Board with regard to her PSAT score, which was high enough to warrant an invitation to apply for the National Hispanic Recognition Program. (We’ll learn whether she was accepted in September.)

What sort of merit based scholarships does Champlain offer? Are there work study programs to help defray some expense?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Hi @MomofBri ! I’m so happy to hear that your daughter loved Champlain during her visit - even during such a wacky spring snowstorm! Thanks for visiting!

We can certainly understand the need to think carefully about finances during this process. I encourage you and your daughter to connect with our Financial Aid Office - they can speak well to your questions and give you a better sense of how the cost of attendance might look depending on certain factors. They won’t necessarily be able to give you an estimate at this point in time, but with the new process in place for the FAFSA (being able to start it much earlier and with the prior year’s tax information), you’ll find you’ll be able to start to work through all these details earlier. It sounds like she’s academically a strong student and could potentially be in good standing to be considered for merit-based aid depending on how our applicant pool looks this upcoming year.

We do offer merit-based scholarships - those are based off of academic strength and test scores. We do have need-based scholarships as well. We also have a work study program as part of our financial aid process that she could potentially qualify for as well.

I hope this gives you some starting points, but as I mentioned, I encourage you to reach out to the Financial Aid Office to get into more details. Their email is finaid[at]champlain.edu.

Please let me know if you have any other questions at this time!

Thank you very much! This process can feel daunting at times.

@MomofBri Happy to help! We understand!

@MomofBri My S will be attending Champlain in Fall 2016. He was awarded $7500 in merit scholarship which is not a lot for a private college. I contacted the financial aid office and asked if they could give anything more because Champlain was his first choice but other colleges had awarded him more in scholarships. He was awarded an additional $2500 for a total of $10K per year. We do not qualify for need based aid. This still makes Champlain a very expensive school but we are grateful for the merit they offered and it is a wonderful college. I hope this gives you some perspective. Best of luck to your D!
