Barnard states on their website that they offers limited aid to international students. However, I have seen colleges that states the same but still rewards qualified students in my country with substantial aid. Should I apply for Barnard if my family contribution is $10-15k? If I should, should it be ED or RD?
Don’t let that dissuade you from applying; there’s always the chance that they could give you the aid that you need. You just need to keep in mind that there’s a big possibility of you not getting enough. Just because other colleges were able to do that for other students in your country doesn’t mean that Barnard will be able to for you. Just make sure you get the financial aid application in at the same time as the admission application and that all of your documents are in on time.
Applying ED is an option, but you need to remember that if you’re admitted, you have signed a binding agreement to attend, regardless of the financial aid. You won’t know for a few months after being admitted how much aid they’re going to offer you. They could come back and offer you nothing, but you are still bound to your agreement. It’s a risk. If it’s one that you’re willing to take and know that Barnard is your number one choice, go for it. But know that you may be screwed later on with the aid.
Feel free to message me with any questions. I was recently accepted and will be starting at Barnard this fall. I applied ED and was deferred and eventually accepted, so I can attempt to answer any questions about that or just any questions in general.
Hi! International student from the class of 2020 here!! They give you 100% of what you need and from my experience it was pretty fair. I got almost a full ride! I went RD just to be safe, but they were my first choice and I made sure to let them know that.
