I am a rising senior and i am looking to apply to university of mn twin cities school of management. However, i know since i would be an OOS student that it may be more costly for me to go.
I am a triplet, and there are 3 of us going to (probably) different schools at the same time, so financial aid is kind of important.
I was wondering if they have any merit aid and if they give it out to OOS students. I have taken basically all honors/ap classes all 4 years, have a 4.48 weighted gpa, good act score, and then am on the high honor roll. My EC’s include: dance, volleyball, basketball, coaching, teen court, and yearbook club.
Also, if i apply early admission when would i hear back about the financial package? Thanks!
I hear that a few of the very top OOS students get merit, but I have never met anyone who received a nickel besides loans. It was kind of a waste of time for my daughter to apply, but then again it was an easy application and a wonderful school. Iowa and Nebraska were particularly generous with merit (and Iowa gives FA too). Miami U (Ohio) was the other state school that offered significant $ (but not enough!)
You can find various reports by searching this forum- http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/search?cat=282&adv=1&search=national+scholarship
My son received a 10K/year award with higher stats than yours, my daughter received a 5K/year award with slightly lower stats. Unweighted GPA, EC and your college/major are also factors.
If your ACT is 32 or higher, I’d say you have a good chance for at least the 5K/year National Scholarship merit award for non-residents and possibly the 10K. There is also a possibility of other stacking awards, both merit and need based. For example, with 3 of you in college full time, you have a much better chance for some financial aid, since your FAFSA EFC will be roughly 1/3 the amount compared to one student in college.
Sadly, Minnesota is no longer the value it was just a few years ago. There could be another 10-15% increase in tuition for freshman entering fall 2019 as well.
My son received the 10k award. I can’t really tell how he compares to you, but he certainly wasn’t stellar. We were certainly bummed about the increase in tuition for OOS kids.
I do want to say that I think you have the right idea looking OOS for bargains. You certainly stand a good chance of finding a school that will end up cheaper than your in-state alternative. I know Ol’ Miss has a great reputation for big aid packages. And Pitt, if your scores are high enough.
I’ve said this on other UMN threads: if you are selected for the Honors Program, you will likely be given some merit aid. That’s how it’s worked in the past. Not that one is necessary for the other. So check out your stats against the ones on this webpage (scroll down a bit). The updated numbers haven’t yet been released.
